Retired Judge Ken Jorgensen had the facts wrong in his recent letter to the editor about Judge Estudillo and his challenger, attorney Nick Wallace. Judge Jorgensen has been retired from the court for nearly eight years, so perhaps he doesn’t have the most current or accurate information. Judge Jorgensen wrote “Nick Wallace has 20 years of courtroom experience” and current Judge David Estudillo “has virtually none.” With respect to both the Judge and Wallace, he is simply wrong about the facts. According to information Wallace himself submitted... Full story

This Friday is Native American Day. For some it is just a day off from school or work. For others it is just another, but for a large population that lives very near here this day is their day to be recognized. There will be powwows, gatherings and celebrations filled with dancers, feathers, salmon and dried meats. For the most part, most of us won’t even notice; but for our neighbors, it is a day for them to embrace their heritage and traditions and try and teach us a little bit about their t... Full story

Hats off to all of the firefighters for their work in getting all of the fires out, especially the fire that was located behind the Columbia River Inn in Coulee Dam. We had some anxious moments as we watched the flames getting closer to the motel. I am especially proud of our motel staff, who assisted in the orderly evacuation of our guests at the motel and kept all of our guests informed as we received fire updates throughout the afternoon and evening on Monday. Thanks again. Mike Bradley Columbia River Inn... Full story
The Redthunder families, Soy, Sharey and Lyle would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to all the firefighters that responded to a fire North of Elmer City on September 11th afternoon. The prompt responses and expertise was a relief to our peace of mind and home sites. Colville Tribal, Coulee Dam, Elmer City, Electric City, Nespelem Valley Electric and all the others on site are appreciated for everything that was provided at this difficult time for our communities.... At a recent meeting of the Coulee Dam Town Council, crime was a topic of major concern by its citizens. WHY? Crime is not just a concern of the town of Coulee Dam; it is a growing problem for all of the people of the Grand Coulee Dam Area. WHY? Coulee Dam has gone through the process of hiring a police chief twice, and the position remains vacant. WHY? Police officers have been hired and have moved on shortly afterwards. WHY? People walking the streets, at all hours of the day and night, have found a haven in Coulee Dam. WHY? The statistical... Full story
I believe the Coulee Dam Police officers are doing their best to improve the situation and are to be commended for their efforts. Even so, petty crime seems to be on the rise in the area patrolled by the short-staffed Coulee Dam police force. Charts and graphs presented by Mayor Greg Wilder at the last Town Council Meeting indicate that the town of Coulee Dam has one of the lowest rates of petty crime (associated with illegal drug use) in the state. However, as Mayor Wilder himself said, … Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics. Citizens attending the... Full story
First, I would like to thank all the volunteers and businesses who helped with the Electric City “Pig For the Park” fund raiser held this past Saturday at Electric City. This year’s support and attendance was down considerably from last year and was a great disappointment to the many volunteers who worked so hard putting on this event. Electric City has been working hard to get a safe, clean, fenced, grassy area for the young in Electric City to play in the community. This fund raiser was a part of this effort. These parks are not funded by th... Full story
Well, America, if I remember my history, we have two opposing ideas: Roosevelt and Reagan. Roosevelt took the Hoover ideas (the “roaring 20’s” and its side effects) and converted America into the greatest nation. Reagan thought we didn’t need all those rules on business and banking (less government) so he promised the “good” life — computers, cell phones, alcohol, drugs, flat screen TVs and SUVs. He made good on his promises. All the presidents after him kept his ideas going, plus its side effects — national debt (9 trillion to 18 trillion). W... Full story
I am still not used to being on the other side of an emergency. For years I was the one running to the fire or person in need, instead of sitting and watching. But Sunday, ironically on 9-11, I watched as firefighters, medics and police rallied to respond to two separate fires that started around the same time. It was an impressive sight as more and more arrived from around the state, coming here to help us and keep us safe from the flickering flames that crept and grew on the hills and in the valleys. They did well, and as far as I knew as of... Full story

Scott, we read your editorial with interest. We moved here 10 years ago. We chose this area for many reasons, safety of the community being one. That feeling of safety has slowly eroded. The statistics the Mayor quoted are fine but they do not reflect how we feel. We believe that drugs are the driving force for the growth in criminal activity. In our opinion, lack of police action has allowed the drug problem to increase. The locations of many of the drug houses are known, but it appears that nothing is being done. If help from other agencies... Full story
Once again we come to the community to thank everyone for a fantastic summer season at the Vets Center. Whether you know us as the Vet Center, VFW or the American Legion (which is who we are), we appreciate everybody who came by and shopped with us during our sale season. Although it seemed like a really long stretch for those of us who worked every week to gather and prepare all the treasures that we had for sale, the time flew by as we greeted many of the same people on a weekly basis. A very special thanks goes out to all the community membe... Full story
We support Ashley Thasher for (Okanogan) county commissioner, District 2. Ashley has demonstrated her willingness to work hard to understand the needs of constituents and county government. She has already invested significant personal time in meeting with a number of county department heads, mayors, and citizens groups. We support her interest in strengthening our local health department. She has been the only one of the remaining candidates to testify before the county commissioners against moving juvenile corrections out of the county, and... Full story
I have known Sheilah Kennedy since 1994 when I worked under her at the Okanogan County Noxious Weed department. I had great respect for her back then and still do to this day. I supported her first campaign and continue to stand by her. Why? Sheilah delivered on her promises. She has provided leadership, accountability, and fiscal responsibility while making enormous personal sacrifices to serve the people of this county. But this race goes beyond Sheilah and her opponent. It’s about the culture of Okanogan County. Our history is one of l... Full story
Two letters attacking our Superior Court judges and commissioner candidate Chris Branch appeared in the Omak Chronicle recently. Citizens county-wide, including Districts 2 and 3, will be choosing between Branch and Sheilah Kennedy in the November general election, so this misinformation must be addressed. James Miller criticizes Chris Branch for accepting campaign contributions from outside the county, specifically from a family that has owned and operated a large cattle ranch in the Tunk valley family for 30 years and are family-oriented. I was getting up to go to work, headed to the shower and decided to click on the TV. What I saw happening in New York City would change not only me but an entire nation. I watched as terrorists took down planes on American soil. This event kept the world captivated for weeks and truths came out slowly. We learned of heroes. We counted the lost. We lit candles and waged a war against this ever happening again. Here we are 15 years later. Memorials are erected all over the country, some with actual pieces of the Twin Towers embedded in their... Full story

People at last week’s Coulee Dam Town Council meeting speaking up about local crime were stating out loud what we’re all feeling: the community is not as safe as it once was. There have been times in the last three decades when petty crimes spiked in the local area, only to recede after one or two arrests. This may be different. It feels different. In the past, the local petty crime rate would rise and fall depending on which thief just got out of jail. Police knew where to find him or her, and it was only a matter of time before the rep... Jess, I have read some strange comments from you, but this one takes the cake and demands a reply. Are you and the other people serious about thinking “B Street” has been the reason for the crime and degradation in our area, a cloud over the town? “B Street” was just a street like any other street in town. My mother and grandmother both worked on B Street during the 30s. My grandmother made pies and potato salad by the tubs at a bakery, and my mother washed clothes six days a week at the local laundry while my dad and grandfather worked... Full story
It would not open up Electric City for potential growth, as the city has said they wanted. It opens private homes for burglary, vandalism, and there is no safety in this for children. (The Star reports we have plenty of crime already.) A neighborhood is not a place to put a water park because back yard and front yard privacy is eliminated and the neighborhood becomes congested with parking and noise; and it is no longer safe for children to walk and ride their bikes. Not everyone works from 9 to 5. Some work different shifts and weekends.... Full story

There are those who fear change, the unknown that comes with something new. We get used to the way things were done in the past, we become comfortable. So when in a single school summer, we get a new superintendent, a new school board member, a new principal, two new vice principals, a new athletic director and at least seven new teachers/staff members’ things can seem to be very uncomfortable in Raider Nation. But strangely enough it does not appear to be. Yes, we will miss the positive face and atmosphere that Mrs. Liberty brought through t... Full story

I was under the impression that we elected people to office to represent us. Silly me! That certainly isn’t the case in Electric City, where the people have no say in what the city council decides to do. They have proven that time and time again. There was a survey (after the council had already decided to have the pathway) but we haven’t learned the outcome of that – just the council telling us, the people, we’re in favor of the pathway. Funny, I haven’t talked to anyone yet in favor of it. The astronomical cost of a pathway could certainly... Full story
