A dozen basketball games got played Saturday afternoon in the Lake Roosevelt gym, but each of them included only 10 minutes of play. The Raider teams - both junior varsity and varsity teams for both girls and boys, hosted the six-school Basketball Jamboree event with Soap Lake, Omak, Inchelium, Nespelem, and Moses Lake Christian. Each team played two short games with three referees packing in a lot of play in just 10 minutes, but not much attention was paid to stats or even scores for long. It...

Seven Lake Roosevelt Raiders traveled to Pasco to compete in the WIAA State XC Championships last week, which has not occurred with a Raider team since this one's oldest athlete was in first grade, Coach Matthew Timentwa said. At a school assembly the day before they got on the bus for Sun Willows Golf Course outside Pasco, Timentwa praised the team. "They worked so hard this year," the coach said. "They all ... put in their best effort, every single one of them, and every single day." Timentwa...

The Raider football team capped their season Thursday night with a big win at home on senior night. Lake Roosevelt hosted the Tekoa-Rosalia Timberwolves in an 8-man game that took the place of an originally scheduled contest with the Okanogan Bulldogs. Head Coach Geary Oliver said the Raiders forfeited to Okanogan because it would have been a mismatch, going against one of the primary safety guidelines coaches in the state are supposed to follow: don't mismatch teams. He indicated this year's...

Caden Portch led the Raiders on the 5,000-meter course, finishing in 17 minutes, 26.58 seconds to take sixth place among 44 runners in the boys’ race. Okanogan’s Landin Evans took first in 17:11.24. The District 5 2B/1B Championships take place Oct. 30 at Ap...

This week's sports schedule was updated Wednesday to reflect late changes as post season starts in some sports. Here's a list of the current schedules....

The outcome of the game with Liberty Bell was even more lopsided than the numbers of players on each football team, but not much. The Mountain Lions mauled the Raiders 70-46 in only the second home game of a "weird" season for the Raiders, and their second to last game of the year. For the Lake Roosevelt team, the challenging schedule comes in part from decisions to play 8-man ball when too few players on either team were eligible. Out of a total official roster of 21, Raiders in the game often...

The Raiders beat the Bridgeport Fillies in three sets Thursday at home, then fell to the Tonasket Tigers there last night by the same score. The losses mean Lake Roosevelt ( 1-5, 3-11) will take on Liberty Bell (4-2, 8-3) in Winthrop Saturday at noon for their first game of the post season in the Central Washington 2B League Volleyball Tournament. If they win the loser-out game, they'll play Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Omak High against top-seeded Manson....

They'll host sixth seed Liberty Bell. This story was updated....

by Scott Hunter The Lake Roosevelt Raiders won their football game against the Chewelah Cougars 56-12 at Jenkins High School Friday in another journey into 8-man play. The team, and some opponents, has had to adjust all season to illness, injury or ineligibility, making it tough to plan on their regular 11-man game. "It has been a crazy season," Coach Geary Oliver said. "Over a third of our players are freshmen, and they have made significant progress since August. "Each game this year players...

Soccer Raider soccer players won their match against the Oroville Hornets last night 4-1 for their third win in the last week. They beat Bridgeport Thursday at home 2-1, got skunked in Davenport 7-0 Saturday, and took out 1A Colville 3-0 Monday. Shae Crollard, Monk Marconi, and Kenzie Portch each scored a goal for LR against the Hornets Tuesday. At goal, Senior Cora Nicholson had four saves, as did Paisley Fury-Smith, a freshman. That win gives LR a 6-4 record for the season so far. They'll...

The Raider football team played the closest thing they've had to a home game so far this season on Saturday in an exhibition game against ACH at the Warrior's Brickhouse Athletic Field in a version of football for which they had one day to prepare. Almira Coulee Hartline, a 1B team, plays 8-man ball; the 2B Raiders play 11-man, which may not sound too different. The game proved otherwise, leaving a 92-44 ACH imprint on the Raiders' backsides. The game replaced a canceled Soap Lake home game for...

The Raider varsity football team will have a game this week after all. It starts at 5 p.m. Saturday in Coulee City against ACH. A Friday game scheduled against Soap Lake was canceled due to a lack of eligible players at Soap Lake, Athletic Director Casey Brewster told the school board Monday night, not long after learning of the cancellation. He was trying to fill the slot, for what had been a home game for the Raiders, by Wednesday but apparently was unable to do so. Lake Roosevelt and Soap... Full story

Raider roundup Soccer The Lake Roosevelt girls' soccer team won their first home game of the season Thursday in a 1-0 win against Reardan, avenging their 5-1 loss last year and demonstrating "a much improved defense which earned its second shutout of the year," noted Coach Solveig Chaffee. Shae Crollard scored that lone goal. Liberty Bell was the victim of the first 2025 shutout Chaffee mentioned, also 1-0, on Sept. 13, when Taloulah Tonasket made "a strong showing in her new position as center...

Lake Roosevelt Raider sports seasons are underway, despite smoke problems that canceled some home and away outside games. Volleyball The LR girls opened their season Sept. 9 with a 3-0 win against Wilson Creek at home, then lost 3-0 to Wilbur-Creston-Keller the next night. Reardan won with the same result Sept. 11, as did Liberty Bell last night on their home court. The Raiders play Manson in Coulee Dam Thursday night at 6:30, then head to Wilson Creek Monday for a 6 p.m. game. Football After...

Kids playing Monday night in the Grand Coulee Dam Youth Soccer league took up the last rays of sunlight at dusk with enthusiasm, even if it was for somersaults during the game instead of what their coaches are trying to instill in them. Makeup games, canceled earlier due to smoke, were underway at the former middle school in Grand Coulee. Ruth Randolph, of the league, said she has 168 kids signed up for the sport this year. Coach Trent Turner said he is surprised at how far many of the...

The sophomore was Lake Roosevelt's highest placer at state and actually tied with Goldendale's Matthew Gray with a jump of 20 feet, 8.75 inches. Officials then look to the athletes' second-best jump, which put Bush just two inches shy of fourth place. "He competed exceptionally well both mentally and physically to get on the podium," Coach Lori Adkins said. - Caden Portch...

Lake Roosevelt track and field athletes did themselves proud last week, setting personal records at the state meet and earning one big mention from the governing body of Washington state high school athletics. That would be for senior John Cooley, whom the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) named athlete of the week May 28, noting his achievements the week before: "John Cooley qualified for Districts in four events: 110m hurdles, 300m hurdles, long jump, and triple jump....
The Raider track and field team at last week’s 2B District 5 meet qualified 11 athletes to continue on to the state championship in Yakima May 29-31. The boys’ team placed fourth out of 17 teams at the Central Washington University Recreational Sports Complex in Ellensburg Thursday, where the top six competitors qualified for state. “It’s been a number of years since we have qualified so many student athletes for state competition,” said Head Coach Lori Adkins. “Many of our athletes went into the district meet having already met steep state...

The Lady Raiders took their postseason softball play as far as they could Friday, ending their season after two games at the state tournament in Yakima. It's always a tough go for the team seeded 16th to go up against the number-one team in the state right off the bus. Lake Roosevelt lost to Freeman May 23 in the opening rounds of the 2025 2B State Fastpitch Softball Tournament at the Gateway Sports Complex, 11-0. The Raider girls gave the next team a good game, leading 1-0 for the better part...
