Raiders football players’ good manners were rewarded with a surprise free meal recently. On their way to a football camp at Eastern Washington University June 30, seven hungry Raiders, accompanied by school board member Butch Stanger, stopped in a café in Creston for breakfast. Four area students met the requirements to earn a high school (HS21+) diploma through Big Bend Community College during the 2018-19 academic year. A plaque with a bronze Coulee Dam High School Beaver mascot will be installed on the basalt pillar in front of Lake Roosevelt Schools and unveiled July 4 at 11 a.m. in a brief ceremony to which all are invited. Coulee Dam High School was open from 1947 until 1971, when it merged with Grand Coulee High School to form Lake Roosevelt. “Beavers sent their fierce spirit to Lake Roosevelt Raiders,” the plaque reads. The Grand Coulee High School Alumni Association got its start the fall of 2000 and awarded its first two scholarships the spring of 2001, $250 each to a boy and a girl graduate of Lake Roosevelt High School. Money for the scholarships is derived from dues and memorials in memory of those who attended school in District 55, teachers or other staff, and family members. During the University of Washington's spring break, a group of five UW students volunteered on a literacy arts project at Nespelem School, working with third-, fourth-, seventh- and eighth-graders to write and publish their own book. The theme this year was "Everyday Heroes." Students across the different grade levels wrote stories on heroes from their communities and beyond. Time is running out to submit applications for Grand Coulee High School Alumni Association scholarships. The applications must be postmarked by May 1, 2019. The awards are open to high school graduating seniors and college students who are direct descendants of former students who attended any of the Grand Coulee School District 55 schools. The long-running winter has made it hard to play spring sports, meant to be played on grass and dirt, not ice and snow.
