    Misty Krohn is one of six teachers in the 29 school districts of the North Central Washington Educational Service District awarded a grant related to the study of the Lower Grand Coulee recently. Krohn, who teaches kindergarten at Lake Roosevelt Elementary, will get the $300 for her project to create a science center in her classroom.     Time is running out to submit applications for Grand Coulee High School Alumni Association scholarships. The applications must be postmarked by Friday, May 1, 2020. The awards are open to high school graduating seniors and college students who are direct descendants of former students who attended any of the Grand Coulee School District 55 schools.     Karen Pace, who has been the music teacher at Lake Roosevelt schools for the past five years, and Terry Owen, who has been driving bus for LR for the past 32 years, will be honored with excellence awards next month.     Public school students will soon have a greater understanding of their sexuality, sexual abuse and the importance of consent under a new law passed by Washington state legislators.     Special detectors may be installed at Lake Roosevelt Schools to address “rampant” vaping at the school. Vaping, which delivers nicotine to the user without tobacco present, is said to be dangerous to the health of anyone by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and especially to the development of adolescent brains.     Several Lake Roosevelt High School students will spend part of their spring break competing at the state Future Business Leaders of America competition in Spokane. The Grand Coulee Dam School District Board of Directors Monday approved the trip to the state for 16 students.     The Grand Coulee Dam School District Board of Directors took new assignments at their Jan. 27 meeting. Director George LaPlace was appointed board chair. Director Carla Marconi was appointed vice chair, and Ken "Butch" Stanger was appointed legislative representative. LaPlace, who has served on the board since 2015, replaces Rich Black as board chair. The grants were awarded at the 2019 Teacher Classroom Grant Award reception held at Confluence Technology Center in Wenatchee.     The gym floor at Lake Roosevelt Elementary needs replacing only five years after the gym, and the school, were built. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board approved the payment of $15,000 toward the replacement floor, the rest of the cost being covered by Northern Hardwood, the company that had installed the original floor, who verbally agreed to cover the rest of the roughly $30,000 total cost of replacing the floor, even though it is no longer under warranty.
