The Grand Coulee High School Alumni Association got its start the fall of 2000 and awarded its first two scholarships the spring of 2001, $250 each to a boy and a girl graduate of Lake Roosevelt High School. Money for the scholarships is derived from dues and memorials in memory of those who attended school in District 55, teachers or other staff, and family members. From the time six scholarships were awarded last spring until the 10-member committee met last week to select this year's recipients, the amount available for awards had grown beyond expectations. The committee voted to award 14 $500 scholarships rather than the six originally planned for this spring. This is the third year scholarships have been awarded to seniors from other high schools as well as those from Lake Roosevelt, with eligibility for applicants from other schools requiring that the student be a direct descendant of a person who attended Grand Coulee School District 55 at any time before May 31, 1971. Continuing education scholarships were also added for college students with at least one year of college, and the eligibility requirement is the same.

Lake Roosevelt Seniors receiving $500 awards and the college they will be attending are Lauryn Alling, Spokane Community College; Lilyana Clark, Undecided; Steven Flowers, Eastern Washington University; Addison Hansen, Walla Walla Community College; Marisha Hobrecht, Wenatchee Valley Community College; Olivia Ludwig, Eastern Oregon University; and Gloria Michel, Spokane Falls Community College.

Madison Clark, Wilbur High School, received an award with eligibility based on her grandmother Linda Campbell Flowers, GCHS Class of 1969, grandfather Kim Clark, Class of 1968, and her great-grandmother, the late Dorothy Young Clark, who graduated from GCHS in 1941. Madison plans to attend the U of Washington. Maggie Hinthorne, McMinnville (OR) High School, the granddaughter of Robert "Ozzie" Rose, Class of 1954, will be attending Arizona State University. Gunnar Whitelaw, Woodway High School, Edmonds, WA, is eligible through his grandmother, Glenna Sprugel Whitelaw, Class of 1968. Gunnar plans to attend Central Washington University.

Of the four continuing education awards, University of Idaho student Paige Dice, the granddaughter of Ida Faye Flowers Dice, GCHS '59, received an award for the second time. She is studying criminology and hopes to work as a forensic profiler after she graduates. The other three recipients all attend WSU. Kerin Marcolin Ludwig, whose mother, Elizabeth Glick Marcolin, graduated from GCHS in 1958, is in her second year studying international business with a second major in German. Kendall Coppersmith is in his fourth year studying Agriculture Technology and Production Management with a minor in Business. Nicole Coppersmith is a third time recipient of the scholarship and will be in Spokane this fall at the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences where she will study to become a speech-language pathologist. Kendall and Nicole are grandchildren of Margaret Rice Kendall, Class of 1951.
