  • Chamber to seek more tourism advertising funds

    The chamber of commerce is after more advertising money with which to fund an ad campaign to boost sagging tourism numbers. Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Peggy Nevsimal appeared before the Regional Board of Mayors at their last meeting and appealed for added help in drawing visitors to the area. Nevsimal told mayors that tourism was down at Grand Coulee Dam last year by about 48,000 visitors, or 10 percent. She reported that lodging establishments remain about 70 percent vacant in the winter and 20 percent empty... Full story

    by Roger S. Lucas Helicopter rides will return as one of the added features of Colorama this year. Colorama, May 8-11, will see Lake Roosevelt High School graduate Tim Tueth return to give helicopter rides to those who want an aerial view of the coulee. Tueth graduated from LRHS in 1992, and had lived in the area since he was in the second grade, so it will be like coming home for him. The Run The Dam will take place the Saturday of Colorama weekend, May 10.     A recent study by the National Park Service shows how a strong visitor base pumps money into local economies. A report on the 2012 season showed that the Lake Roosevelt National Recreational Area had nearly 1.8 million visits in 2012. That resulted in more than $71 million being spent in nearby communities, the report stated.     Ten Years Ago Growing concerns about why a police officer was needed in the schools were aired publicly Monday night at the shool board meeting. School resource officer Joe Lausing spent 40 minutes answering questions from the school board. Questions ranged from who monitors his visits to who evaluates his job performance. “This is an important position, not just for the schools, but for the community,” Lausing added in his address to the board.     The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual awards night will be Thursday, Feb. 13, at Pepper Jack’s Bar and Grille, officials said this week.     Ten Years Ago Riding the ski slopes and keeping good grades have been combined in a program for students from Nespelem and Grand Coulee Dam School Districts. The club of 89 kids have academic requirements intended to keep their English skills, overall grades and attendance up. In return they get a day on the Loop Loop Slopes every Saturday for five weeks. A local man wants the stray cat problem in his neighborhood solved.
