Alex Tufts is sworn in as the newest member of the Grand Coulee Dam School District Board of Directors Monday. Tufts, a Lake Roosevelt High School graduate, himself, ran unopposed in the Nov. 5 election and garnered 538 votes. Tufts takes the board seat vacated by Debra Covington (seated at left). A dozen local teachers, including 10 in the Nespelem School District recently received grants from the North Central Education Foundation. The grants were awarded at the 2019 Teacher Classroom Grant Award reception held at Confluence Technology Center in Wenatchee. Each teacher applied for a Teacher Grant based on the needs of his or her classrooms and each received $300, the maximum amount awarded to purchase items for the classrooms. The gym floor at Lake Roosevelt Elementary needs replacing only five years after the gym, and the school, were built. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board approved the payment of $15,000 toward the replacement floor, the rest of the cost being covered by Northern Hardwood, the company that had installed the original floor, who verbally agreed to cover the rest of the roughly $30,000 total cost of replacing the floor, even though it is no longer under warranty. The Lake Roosevelt High School band performs in their new uniforms during halftime of the Raider football game Oct 25. The band received 60 uniforms in total, Music Teacher Karen Pace said, costing about $3,500 and paid for with grant money and money donated from local groups. Raiders football players’ good manners were rewarded with a surprise free meal recently. On their way to a football camp at Eastern Washington University June 30, seven hungry Raiders, accompanied by school board member Butch Stanger, stopped in a café in Creston for breakfast. A plaque with a bronze Coulee Dam High School Beaver mascot will be installed on the basalt pillar in front of Lake Roosevelt Schools and unveiled July 4 at 11 a.m. in a brief ceremony to which all are invited. The Grand Coulee High School Alumni Association got its start the fall of 2000 and awarded its first two scholarships the spring of 2001, $250 each to a boy and a girl graduate of Lake Roosevelt High School. Money for the scholarships is derived from dues and memorials in memory of those who attended school in District 55, teachers or other staff, and family members.
