    An author who has written extensively about Okanogan County history, will offer a reading at the Grand Coulee public library. Bruce Holbert will read from his recent book "The Hour of Lead" a epic family novel and coming of age story that is once again imbibed with the mythology of the west at 6 p.m., Aug. 19.   • Bank is collecting school supply donations

    The Grand Coulee branch of North Cascades Bank is collecting backpacks and other school supplies during the month of August for needy students. Monetary donations are also being accepted and will be used to purchase supplies. All items will be distributed to schools in the Grand Coulee Dam School District.   • Group looking for "Seegoing Cowboys" info

    The Okanogan County Historical Society is seeking more information on a group called the Seagoing Cowboys who volunteered to take cattle and horses to war-torn countries after WWII from 1945 to 1947. Some 7,000 United States men and boys took part; 29 from Washington State and 14 from Okanogan County. Peggy Reiff Miller, Indiana, has been researching this group since 2002. She will be coming to Okanogan County to speak on Aug. 24 at the Whitestone Church of the Brethren at 9:30 a.m. and at the Ellisforde Church of the Brethren at 11:30 a.m.... Full story

    Grand Coulee Police 8/4 - A Fairbanks, Alaska driver pulled his motorhome into the area at the top of the dam and USBR Plant Protection advised police of the incident. The Alaska man said he just made a wrong turn. - An Elmer City man was cited for criminal trespass with a domestic violence tag after refusing to leave when requested to by his wife. The report was sent to the prosecutor’s office for possible action. - A patrolman checked on a report of gunshots being heard in the Noble Road area.     The LRHS Class of 1984 will be celebrating its 30 year reunion the weekend of August 23. Friday night the group will meet at the Electric City Bar and Grill. On Saturday a gathering at Spring Canyon will be held left to where the boats can come ashore. Saturday night a banquet dinner at Pepper Jack’s begins at 6:30 p.m. with Love Stitch at 9 p.m. The cost for the dinner is $25.   • Help with life jackets

    Rotarians have connected with the Safe Kids program at both Crescent Bay and Spring Canyon boat launches in an effort to save lives in area waters. The program is sponsored by Grant County Health District, the Grand Coulee Dam Rotary Club and the National Park Service. The program provides life jackets at the two boat launches for people who plan water activity but don't have enough life jackets. A sign explains it all at both launches, and life jackets are hanging on the sign for temporary use... Full story

  • Sawhorse cow contest coming to the fair

    Grant County CattleWomen are seeking entries for their annual “Sawhorse Cow Contest” for this year’s Grant County Fair, August 12-16. Entrants must decorate a sawhorse to resemble a cow or bull; cash prizes will be awarded to the top three placers in each of the age groups (youth and adult). Rules and entry forms are listed in the 2014 Fair Exhibitors Guide Book, at the Extension Office in the Grant County Courthouse as well as on line.     Tigers celebrate 50 years The Grand Coulee Class of 1964 held their 50th reunion this past weekend at the home of Susan Miller's in Electric City. Friday night was a social hour; Saturday BBQ and we let balloons go with names in memorial to those that have passed on. Sunday we met for breakfast at Pepper Jack's to say our goodbyes.     So the story goes on that Sammy made a long run up the full length of Lake Roosevelt into Canada for a quick stop near the mouth of the Columbia River where he almost ran aground, floundering where the river narrowed. The officer noted that the man was intoxicated and wanted a ride to his destination.     Plant Problem Diagnostic Clinics have started at the WSU Extension Office located in the Okanogan County Courthouse, room 101. These clinics are a part of the public service that the Okanogan Master Gardener volunteers contribute to the community and are designed to help the backyard and non-commercial gardener identify, diagnose and provide solutions to various problems they may be having in their own gardens. Not so long ago in the summer of 2012, possibly 100 or more trees, many planted when the town was in its infancy, were toppled or uprooted in that weird storm, including two evergreens, towering spruce, that stood in the Mason City Park in Coulee Dam.
