Learning and fun combined The school board Monday night approved a field trip request from SHARP Kids and Summer Rocks to go to Moses Lake. The trip will include a stop at a pea farm, and at Soap Lake to conclude a unit on water testing. While at Moses Lake, the group will stop over at the Moses Lake Surf’n Slide park for two hours of swimming. The trip is planned for Aug. 1. Grand Coulee Police 7/16 - A woman reported that she found in a ditch a Bureau of Reclamation envelope that contained a number of cards. 7/17 - Police received a report of a woman walking in the street yelling at herself. Police found the suspect and asked her to stay out of the roadway. She agreed to do so. - A business owner requested that police help in getting a person to leave her establishment. History was made 80 years ago, July 16. Thousands of people gathered at the Grand Coulee Dam site in 1933 as Gov. Clarence Martin oversaw the groundbreaking for the dam. With a sledge hammer in hand, Martin promised that Grand Coulee Dam would deliver cheap power and millions of gallons of irrigation water to a country upended by the depression. Ten Years Ago A fire once again hit the Colville Indian Reservation last week as flames charred more than 2,000 acres and threatened several homes. One of the unique attributes of the Coulee is that when you return to this area after a long departure, it appears that nothing has changed. It is the same as when you left. I have heard this hundreds of times from people who have left this area after high school and returned as adults. I think that is kind of a cool way too look at our area. The new Keller ferry, the Sanpoil, was launched at about 8:40 a.m. last Thursday at Crescent Bay. The new ferry, after final fitting and testing, will replace the old Martha S Ferry which was taken out of service July 8. The Sanpoil’s hull arrived by truck March 18, and Foss Maritime workers have been assembling the vessel until last week. Just as the nation was about to celebrate its most patriotic holiday, one of its greatest symbols of achievement literally closed the gates on what would have been a welcoming spectacle. Ten Years Ago Sleeping in the Grand Coulee Dam Visitor Arrival Center parking lot paid off for an Oregon couple last Friday when they were reunited with their pet beagle. Tammy Coyne of Canby, Ore., said her and her husband, Phil’s eight-month-old beagle Daisy escaped from their recreational vehicle during the show. Grand Coulee Police 7/9 - Police banned a man from property on Fortuyn Road where he had been looking into cars. The property owner said he had run the man off and gone to the store, and when he returned the man was back. - An Electric City man reported two dogs loose on Stevens Street and they appeared uncared for. Fleeing suspects in an Ephrata burglary literally drove the tires off their car after Grand Coulee police put down spike strips to deflate the tires Friday night. Grand Coulee police deployed the spike strips at the north edge of Coulee Dam about 11:30 p.m., to stop the speeding car coming into the area from Omak with Omak police in pursuit. The vehicle had been going up to 90 mph through the Colville Indian Reservation and police reports stated it later traveled some 50 mph through Grand Coulee and Electric City. The debut of the all new Laser Light Show, which had been scheduled for Aug. 8, will now occur next year, officials at the Bureau of Reclamation said this week. A group of stakeholders from the area, who are working with the company preparing the new show, said after a preliminary viewing that the show needed work. Accordingly, bureau Public Affairs Officer Lynne Brougher said it was decided to move the new show to next season. A member of the state Transportation Improvement Board will be in Grand Coulee Aug. 6, to meet with the city council. The city has a $215,000 grant and has been asked by the TIB to come up with a comprehensive plan on how they would use it. The grant was first given to the city to build sidewalks on Spokane Way, but that was before officials realized that sidewalks to Center School probably were not necessary because the school will be closing in the fall of 2014, when students move into their new school in Coulee Dam. A young teacher from Wenatchee is spending his first summer off standing on the water, for 1,200 miles. Matt Honor pulled his paddle board ashore at Crescent Bay Saturday afternoon, needing portage around Grand Coulee Dam. Honor had called ahead, and chamber of commerce members met him to help. Ten Years Ago A master plan is now in the works for Coulee Dam’s Mason City Park and all of the town’s residents can help decide what the plan will contain. A proposed master plan with a rough outline of future changes to the east Coulee Dam park was approved by the town council last Wednesday. The town of Coulee Dam has received a grant of $3,000 to inventory its trees and prepare a plan to maintain and expand one of the town’s most visible and valuable assets, an official committee announced in a press release. Thelma Hakola passed awayTuesday, July 2 after an extended heroic battle with cancer. She was born on April 13, 1928, in Colorado Springs, Colo., the last of 15 children born to John and Myrtle Hitchcock. She married Matt Hakola on March 23, 1946, and they remained best friends and sweethearts throughout their lives. Rob Skordas, who had a chiropractic practice in Grand Coulee years ago but changed careers, is now the manager of Bureau of Reclamation’s Lower Colorado Dams Office, which manages, operates and maintains Hoover, Davis and Parker dams and associated facilities on the Colorado River. Grand Coulee 6/30 - An Electric City man told police that his vehicle had been damaged while at Safeway sometime during the past month. He was asked to bring the vehicle to the police station so an officer could take pictures of the damage. He told the officer he couldn’t drive the vehicle to the police station because the license had expired.
