by Roger S. Lucas Grand Coulee police officers can no longer operate within the town limits of Coulee Dam, according to a letter sent last Wednesday to Police Chief Mel Hunt. The letter from Coulee Dam Chief Pat Collins revokes permission for Grand Coulee officers to operate within the town of Coulee Dam, even when they are covering for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Towns to put up lights The city and town crews from Electric City, Grand Coulee and Coulee Dam, will put up the Christmas lights this year. This came out of the Regional Board of Mayors meeting Monday as Electric City Mayor Jerry Sands said he had heard from the other mayors who were willing to share the lights and have their respective crews put them up in their own municipalities. A handful of citizens from the Faith Community Church in Electric City held a “Blessing of the Steel” at the Grand Coulee Dam School District’s new K-12 school complex in Coulee Dam Friday. Workers laid the last of the steel girders Thursday, and the crane that has been lifting the steel beams was taken from the area. Electric City’s council approved a request for a $2,000 contribution to the Grand Coulee Dam/Coulee City Nutritional Program at its meeting Oct 8. The council will take a formal vote on the resolution at its next meeting, Nov. 5. The request, made by Myrna M. Schryvers, director of the program, is for the city’s 2014 budget. This budget year Electric City gave the organization $1,500. Schryvers, by letter, explained to the council how costs have risen and how popular the program has become. Ten Years Ago Skateboarders banned from business district in a new law passed by Coulee Dam Council. The new ordinance states that its unlawful to ride on any street, alley, sidewalk, park or publicly owned parking lots in the central business district of the town. Grand Coulee 10/8 - Police were called to the Grand Coulee Dam Middle School after a bomb threat note was found in a student’s book. The writing on the note matched the student’s handwriting. The student wouldn’t admit that he wrote the note. Officials at the school suspended the student for five days. 10/9 - USBR Plant Protection advised police that an employee drove recklessly as he approached the Station 3 guard shack. Florenzen who replaces Otto Heath who is leaving the department to take a similar position in the Boise area. Florenzen has been a patrol officer in Coulee Dam for the past two years, but was let go when the town of Coulee Dam lost its contract with the Bureau of Reclamation. They are a group of local community volunteers who have volunteered to pick peaches, apples, Italian plums, apricots, tomatoes and whatever else may need to be picked. Whatever is picked usually goes to the senior centers in Grand Coulee and Nespelem, and also to the Senior Manor in Grand Coulee. Also, items are delivered to homebound elderly senior citizens in the Grand Coulee Dam area. Grand Coulee Police 9/30 - A Keller woman was pulled over for not using her directional signals while turning and the officer found that her driver’s license and registration had expired. Mill to reopen The Omak Wood Products mill will have a private grand opening, Monday, Oct. 7, The Star newspaper learned Friday. A spokesperson said that Washington Gov. Jay Inslee will be one of the dignitaries at the event. The mill, closed since 2009, has employed from 200-300 workers. The actual start-up date was not made available. The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $2.5 million contract for asbestos abatement work at the Grand Coulee Power Office and at the Hungry Horse Power Office in Montana. The contract was awarded Sept.16 to Modecor Corporation of Dallas, Texas. The work involves removing asbestos-containing material and asbestos contamination from power plants, switchyards, pumping/generating plant, and other structures at Grand Coulee Dam and Hungry Horse Dam. Grand Coulee Dam School District Superintendent Dennis Carlson told his board Monday night that the K-12 school construction venture is back on schedule. “The elementary side of the project will be enclosed by the end of October, allowing workers to be indoors during the winter,” he said. Coulee Dam rejected a bid of $21,000 to clean up a burned-out house at 611 Holly Street last Wednesday night. The lone bid had been submitted by Deckwa Construction, a Grand Coulee firm. The council did so because they weren’t sure where the money would come from. At issue also is how the town would recover the cost of cleaning up the property. One council member suggested that Okanogan County would probably end up owning the property because of unpaid taxes. The county wouldn’t pay off any lien the city would have on the cleanup effort. Ten Years Ago A spaghetti dinner and auction was held at the Electric City Vets Center to raise money for Cindy Corpe to help pay her medical bills from a recent accident at work. $8,000 to $9,000 was raised for her medical bills and Cindy said she cried when she saw how many people showed up. It was standing room only and nearly 100 items were auctioned off. Raiders Cross Country took first at Connell Invitational last Saturday. Bernard Joseph “Bernie” Morin, 77, passed away at his Elmer City, Wash., home early in the morning of Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013. Born during the spring at the southern edge of the Fort Peck Reservation in Poplar, Mont., on May 3, 1936, to Joseph and Isabele Morin, Bernie left high school during his junior year to join the U.S. Navy.
