    The Bureau of Reclamation will be adding jobs at Grand Coulee Dam over the next several years, boosting employment at the project by about 40 permanent jobs, plus adding a similar number that will fluctuate as special maintenance projects start and finish, Power Manager Mark Jenson announced Thursday. “We’ve got a good future for Grand Coulee.   • New fall festival offers a Saturday of fun

    A whole lot of things are happening Saturday, Oct. 13, during the chamber of commerce’s new Coulee Fall Festival. Free hayrides are planned behind a horse-drawn wagon. Another highlight will be a pet parade down Midway Avenue. Chamber Secretary Debbie Starkey said those bringing pets are asked to wear a costume to make the event more colorful.     Susan Miller is retiring this week after serving 14 years as manager of the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce. It was her day, last Thursday, as members met at the Eagles Lodge to say farewell to the popular Electric City resident.     Peggy Nevsimal will be the new manager for the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce. Nevsimal will take the place of Susan Miller who will retire from the position in September. The new manager comes from a strong marketing background and was most recently assistant manager at Sunbanks Lake Resort where she has worked for the past three years.     Ten Years Ago The recent awarding of a grant to the town of Coulee Dam could ensure the restoration of Douglas Park to its original condition. Rod Hartman announced at the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon last Thursday that the town received a $98,996 matching grant from Okanogan County’s Board of Commissioner.   • Firefighters save many homes from big wildfire

    A wildfire that broke out Tuesday evening scorched thousands of acres of brush and timber and two barns -- but no homes, thanks to the quick response of local fire districts working together. The Buffalo Lake Road Fire started near the intersection of Buffalo Lake Road and Peter Dan Road just north of Elmer City about 8:30 p.m. Aug. 14.     Visitors to the area in 2013, will see a brand new laser light show at Grand Coulee Dam. The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $1.6 million contract to LumaLaser of Eugene, Ore., recently to develop the new show. Funding for the new laser show and equipment comes from Bonneville Power Administration and will be used to not only develop the show but upgrade equipment as well as sound quality.     Several music concerts have been scheduled in a series of free summer concerts at North Dam Park and Event Center. The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce has scheduled a variety of live bands to play in the park at its grassy hillside amphitheater and is arranging an advertising campaign to promote them.     Money OK’d for park district Mayor Jerry Sands at Electric City got an OK from the council to sign an agreement for the city to provide $10,000 to the Coulee Area Park & Recreation District, to help fund maintenance activity at North Dam Park.
