His firm will be set up Saturday, April 28, at Strate Funeral Home, from 9-1 p.m., to shred your documents, courtesy of the Grand Coulee Dam Rotary Club and as part of Electric City’s Earth Day celebration. The public is invited to the Colville Tribal “Earth Day” celebration, Friday, April 20, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Indian Agency powwow grounds. Organizers were hoping for over a thousand people turning out to take part in activities and visiting displays and information booths. World champion bull rider Shane Proctor, along with some of his rodeo friends, will hold the “Shane Proctor Bull & Steer Riding School” at the Nespelem Rodeo Grounds, April 3 and 4. Tribal Recycling manager Joaquin Bustamante said last week that he hopes “Earth Day” on April 20, will attract some 1,200 visitors to the grassy area near the Trading Post at the Colville Indian Agency. The event is catering to school children and is affording space for those who identify with “Mother Earth” to present areas of interest. Ten Years Ago Two Coulee Dam residents have worked hard for the last nine years to convert what was the Ponderosa Motel into the technologically state-of-the art Columbia River Inn. Three weeks ago, Ron and Diane LeMay took a large technological leap forward with the installation of fiber optics in every room and even in the laundry room. Last Saturday could mark the final time an annual children’s theater will come to the Grand Coulee Dam area. Ridge Riders President George Kohout thinks a new event the club is planning could become as big or bigger than the annual Colorama Rodeo in May. The new “ranch rodeos” planned for June 30 and Sept. 22 will bring a lot of people into town, Kohout said. For Rod Desjardins, making pizzas is more than a job, it’s a way of life. His “Hometown Pizza” restaurant was honored last Thursday by the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce as the local “Business of the Year.” Desjardins’ first job as a teenager was in a Seattle area pizza parlor, and he’s been at it nearly ever since. A grant-funded study will determine the feasibility of each aspect of a community/wellness center for the region following the award of a contract to Gary Leva, director of the Benewah Wellness Center in Plummer, Idaho and principal at the Gary Consulting Group in Spokane. Leva was instrumental in the formation of the community center serving the Plummer, Idaho area and several others. Hotel/motel tax money flowed freely in Electric City last Tuesday night when the city council voted to provide the Ridge Riders $4,000 and the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce $13,000. The money collected as a tax on motel rooms and campsites, must be used to support tourism. Both groups made presentations at the meeting showing how the money would be used.
