The local housing market is surviving a bumpy ride and is showing signs of improvement, real estate broker Merle Kennedy told chamber of commerce members at a Thursday luncheon last week. Kennedy said that the housing market last year looked bleak but with a number of sales late in the year, 2012 nearly matched the value of homes sold the year before. Before the international financial crisis, home sales through Foisy & Kennedy in 2007 totalled over $8 million, with 75 units sold. In 2011 sales totaled $6,638,600 and home sales came to... Ten Years Ago Jerry Beiermanwas selected as Volunteer of the Year for 2002. A long-term plan for Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area’s new superintendent will develop after she gets to know the area for a couple months. “I intend to develop a vision in the next six to nine months for a five year plan,” said Deborah Bird. Membership up Chamber of commerce Manager Peggy Nevsimal reported at the group’s weekly luncheon meeting last Thursday that 11 new members had joined the chamber so far this year. She reported that 36 regular members had already paid their 2013 dues. Could it be a sign of an early spring? Electric City shot the rest of its hotel/motel budget for 2013, at its meeting last Tuesday night. The city council Dec. 11, held to its policy of budgeting just half of what it took in during 2012, and putting the other half into its hotel/motel reserve fund. Odessa to get meat plant The Odessa Public Development Authority (OPDA) has signed a design-build contract with Spokane based Garco Construction for a new 7,000 square foot USDA livestock processing facility to be built in the Odessa Industrial Park. The facility will serve small to mid-sized producers. The new plant will offer USDA carcass inspection, processing, packaging and improved access to retail markets previously unavailable to local producers. It’s scheduled to open in May. Electric City will appropriate $20,472 for the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 tourism promotion program, following a vote of the city council last Tuesday night. Chamber of commerce Manager Peggy Nevsimal had presented a $61,000-plus promotional plan to Electric City, Grand Coulee and Coulee Dam councils. The chamber of commerce made a pitch for hotel/motel tax money at Coulee Dam’s Council meeting last Wednesday night. Manager Peggy Nevsimal walked council members through a comprehensive $61,000 plan on how the chamber was going to use the promotional funds to attract both nearby visitors and those from the west side of the mountains. The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Vintners/Brewers/Auction event Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Vets Center in Electric City. Chamber Manager Peggy Nevsimal said that only 49 tickets remain for the event. The hall will hold 180 for the popular event and 131 tickets have already been sold. The three municipalities that collect hotel/motel taxes have a combined total of $434,000 in reserve, even after spending over $100,000 this year to promote tourism through a variety of ways. Electric City is sitting on $197,000, Grand Coulee about $96,000 and Coulee Dam, $141,250. The funds, collected from customers staying in motel rooms and at campgrounds, by state law must be used for the promotion of tourism.
