The local housing market is surviving a bumpy ride and is showing signs of improvement, real estate broker Merle Kennedy told chamber of commerce members at a Thursday luncheon last week. Kennedy said that the housing market last year looked bleak but with a number of sales late in the year, 2012 nearly matched the value of homes sold the year before. The city council Dec. 11, held to its policy of budgeting just half of what it took in during 2012, and putting the other half into its hotel/motel reserve fund. Odessa to get meat plant The Odessa Public Development Authority (OPDA) has signed a design-build contract with Spokane based Garco Construction for a new 7,000 square foot USDA livestock processing facility to be built in the Odessa Industrial Park. The facility will serve small to mid-sized producers. Chamber of commerce Manager Peggy Nevsimal had presented a $61,000-plus promotional plan to Electric City, Grand Coulee and Coulee Dam councils. The chamber of commerce made a pitch for hotel/motel tax money at Coulee Dam’s Council meeting last Wednesday night. Manager Peggy Nevsimal walked council members through a comprehensive $61,000 plan on how the chamber was going to use the promotional funds to attract both nearby visitors and those from the west side of the mountains. The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Vintners/Brewers/Auction event Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Vets Center in Electric City. The three municipalities that collect hotel/motel taxes have a combined total of $434,000 in reserve, even after spending over $100,000 this year to promote tourism through a variety of ways. Electric City is sitting on $197,000, Grand Coulee about $96,000 and Coulee Dam, $141,250.
