The meeting is set for 5 p.m. on the corner of Grant and Ferry, where the project starts. The city notified residents along the street of tonight's meeting with doorhanger notices left at each residence on Friday, so city officials can explain and show... Full story

by Scott Hunter A year ago, it was an idea shared while visiting in a garden. Last week, Plain Jane's was named "Business of the Year" for 2022 by the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce. Caroline Walsh had cancer then and was going through chemotherapy. She decided to start a business that would research and bring in healthy products for the local community. Rachel Anderson was helping her with her garden the day Walsh presented the idea to her. "I was like, absolutely!" Anderson told...
Electric City has canceled tonight’s (Tuesday, May 9) city council meeting for lack of a quorum. City Clerk Peggy Nevsimal also said the city, which normally offers online access to its meetings, also has no internet service at the moment. The agenda for the meeting included several topics that would have required a vote of the council, plus several others that would have included discussion but likely would have been tabled for later research anyway, so the lack of council members able to attend would have made the meeting less than p... Former chamber executive director Rachelle Baughman was named the organization's "Achiever of the Year" for 2022 last week after deciding to leave that job last winter and start her own business. Baughman's move set in motion a series of changes at the chamber, including rethinking about what it needs in a new era from a person in Baughman's former position. In announcing the choice at the annual awards dinner Wednesday, board member Nic Alexander said Baughman fits the word "achiever," which...

It's been an interesting year for the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce, especially if you're President Natalie Dennis. Dennis and others outlined past challenges and future plans and directions last Wednesday night at the chamber's annual meeting and awards dinner. Dennis told attendees at PK's Culinary that the chamber is once again facilitating "business after hours" events where business owners can "speak with like-minded people and bounce ideas off of each other." Two have been... Full story
by Scott Hunter The Lady Raiders wrapped their regular season last week with three games against the Brewster Lady Bears, barely losing twice on the road after beating Brewster 3-0 in Grand Coulee. Aaliyah (Marchand had an incredible night on the mound.” Marchand, the lone senior on the team, struck out 17 batters, allowing three hits and walking just one. Eighth-grader Swager led the team in hits, going 2-3 with two si...
Raider runners, throwers and jumpers scored highly at the Tonasket Small School Meet April 25, then applied themselves at the Rieke Invitational on Friday, placing well among 15 schools. At Tonasket, where just four schools competed, Head Coach Lori Adkins said, “athletes were able to try some new events … which was really fun. In the high jump we had five jumpers total.” That dynamic added a lot to the team points on the boys’ and girls’ sides, Adkins noted. Logan Marconi took first place in the 800-meter race, setting a personal record in...

The Emergency Department saw 354 visits in the month, 39 more...

Aaliyah Marchand pitched both games Saturday, striking out 23 Tonasket batters, allowing 11 hits and four walks during the doubleheader. Marchand's grand slam in the first game counted for four runners...

Lake Roosevelt High School's track and field did well in meets in Manson and Quincy in the last week, drawing attention from competing schools. At the Manson Small Schools meet April 18, LR's distance team of Logan Marconi and Caden Portch took first and second place, respectively, in the 1,600-meter race. Marconi ran it in five minutes, 16.05 seconds. Portch crossed the finish line in 5:21.16. "It is exciting to see our distance runners' hard work in practice pay off in meets," commented Head...
The Triple Fish Challenge fishing tournament added a big new feature Friday, inviting kids from anywhere in the community to come down and catch big fish from a pen. We're not talking about a little tank, or even a big one. These folks built a net pen between docks and called in Pacific Seafood, which happily donated 250 very good sized rainbow trout. Luckily, Lake Roosevelt School got out at 1 p.m.. "It wasn't long after that that you could hear kids squealing every minute, it seemed like," said Danielle Florenzen, of Pacific Seafood, whose...
Several schools in Lincoln County were among more than 30 in the state that shut down April 12 after receiving and email claiming a bomb was in the building. Lake Roosevelt Schools was not among them, and after checking staff emails for a similar message determined the Grand Coulee Dam School District had not received the threat. Superintendent Paul Turner notified the community with a posting online. “At this time, we have not received any such email or threat,” Turner stated. “We will continue to monitor the situation and update you if more...

Running in with a movie script-like ending, Sawyer Steffens crossed home plate after her hit over the fence for the Lake Roosevelt Lady Raiders' second win in Saturday's doubleheader against Omak in Grand Coulee. Lake Roosevelt edged out the Omak Pioneers 6-5 in the first game, 5-4 in the second. "What Sawyer did in that second game was what most kids dream of," Coach Jaci Gross said. "Bottom of the seventh, two outs, and a walk-off homerun. It was something I will never forget." Aspen Smith...
Lake Roosevelt’s track and field athelets traveled to Davenport and Kittitas last week, placing well in both events. Davenport’s April 11 event was fast and fun, coach Lori Adkins said, where points were only given to first, second and third place finishes. “It was a great way to begin our two-meets-a-week section of the season.” Carly Neddo took second place in the shot put and in the javelin with her season’s best throw. Raeley Portch placed third in the 300-meter hurdles. Logan Marconi took three third places: in the long jump, the 800-m...
A discussion on what kinds of administrators are needed at Lake Roosevelt Schools and how to pay for them turned Monday toward weighing the merits of a “school resource officer” versus a “security officer,” which the district currently has. Currently at the schools, a dean of students handles some discipline issues and more, and a security officer is there to handle immediate flare ups and discipline problems, including potential violence. But current grant funding for that position may well go away this year, Superintendent Paul Turner...

Bowden will attend the meeting and talk with citizens, as will Fire Chief Mark Payne. Kohout sa...
De-annexing a portion of Electric City was one topic of discussion at a retreat its city council held March 18 to discuss various matters. The council and mayor reviewed with the city attorney the process for de-annexing a large part of the city that was added several years ago, moving the boundary further south and encompassing land on the other side of Osborne Bay on Banks Lake. Kohout said the city will ask the council, probably in June or July this year, to consider a resolution to put the matter on the ballot for the November general...

After Tax Day, you may want to clean house of no-longer-needed financial records.
