    They are one, two, three in their class, and like three peas in a pod.They are this year's Gates Millenium Scholars at Lake Roosevelt High School. The three - Chyenne Kelly-Marconi, Daniel Campobasso and Brandin Smith - have all won a full ride at the university of their choice as a result of their selection by the Gates organization.   • Chair trails two in tribal primary

    Colville Business Council Chairman Michael O. Finley is behind two challengers in Saturday’s poll votes for the tribal leadership election. Finley currently holds Position 2 in the Inchelium District and chairs the 14-member council. Both Marvin Joseph Kheel (61 votes) and Yvonne Swan (52 votes) garnered more poll votes than Finley’s 45. Polling was certified Monday. Others in that race include Marlin R. Simpson (30 votes) and Pat Laramie-Brooks (15 votes). Absentee ballots have yet to be counted and will be certified May 8.     There will be bucking bulls, and more bucking bulls, and a wild horse race! A wild horse race? That's right, an added feature to the third annual Cleatis Lacy Memorial Bull Riding event this year, May 24, is a wild horse race.   • New bowling alley owners get lease

    The Coulee Dam Town Council approved a four-year lease with new owners of Riverview Lanes Bowling Alley at its Wednesday night meeting. The lease with present owners, Pat and Sara Zlateff, who have had the eight-lane alley for the past seven years, expires May 1. The new owners are Sherry and Jeremy Moore, who reside in Electric City. It was a fast turn around for the town, and will mean that Riverview Lanes will remain open without a break.   • Three tapped for Gates Millennium scholarship

    Three Lake Roosevelt High School students were named Gates Millennium Scholars last week. The three are Brandin Smith, Chyenne Kelly-Marconi and Daniel Campobasso. The scholarships are given to minority students who come from low-income families and who qualify under an extensive process. Ten Gates Millennium Scholarships were given in the state of Washington this year, with Lake Roosevelt students given three.     Shawn Derrick was elected to fill a vacant seat on the Coulee Dam Town Council Wednesday night, but not without some twists and turns. Bob Poch, the councilman that Derrick replaces, had a lot to do with Derrick being seated at the meeting.     Driving by Mason City Memorial Park people did a double take when they noticed the big chain saw sculpted salmon was gone from its base. Have no worry, the Chinook salmon is safely stored in the Coulee Dam town warehouse, where it awaits some final changes to its rather stiff and upright stance.     Susan Dechant walked Coulee Dam council last Wednesday night through the intriguing tale of a monument lost and a new one proposed. Lost for non-payment was a monument erected in 1938 along the then main road in Delano to honor workers who died during construction of Grand Coulee Dam. The bill on the American Legion monument, some $1,750, Dechant noted, wasn’t promptly paid and the Legion asked for more time. That was granted by the Colville monument maker.   • New laser show will debut in May

    The all-new laser light show on the face of Grand Coulee Dam, will debut May 24, Bureau of Reclamation officials stated. It replaces the original show developed in 1989 at a cost of $791,806. The new show, was created under a $1.6 million contract, by LumaLaser of Eugene, Oregon, and guided by a stakeholders group made up of interest groups that benefit from the dam and Columbia Basin Project.     Lake Roosevelt’s gym will survive the wrecker’s ball, and it may take on a new appearance. It all depends on what funds are left over after the Grand Coulee Dam School District completes its new K-12 facility, due to open Sept. 15. The school board Monday night agreed to put a red metal roof on the gym, matching the roof of the new school, and to try to match the siding that is now going up on the new school.   • Chamber to seek more tourism advertising funds

    The chamber of commerce is after more advertising money with which to fund an ad campaign to boost sagging tourism numbers. Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Peggy Nevsimal appeared before the Regional Board of Mayors at their last meeting and appealed for added help in drawing visitors to the area. Nevsimal told mayors that tourism was down at Grand Coulee Dam last year by about 48,000 visitors, or 10 percent.     Electric City is asking residents to make their wishes known on the size of “accessory” buildings at a public work session, Tuesday, April 29, beginning at 7 p.m., at city hall. Mayor Jerry Sands stated this week that if the attendance at the planning commission meeting is large enough it would be moved to the fire station. The current size limit of “accessory” buildings in Electric City, according to its comprehensive plan, is 850 square feet.   • Furniture firms win new school bids

    Two furniture manufacturers have been awarded contracts for the new school facility in Coulee Dam, officials announced. Virco, a California firm, was awarded a $469,156 contract to provide furniture for classrooms in the K-12 facility. School Specialists, a Seattle firm, was awarded a $183,290 contract to provide furnishings for the offices, art room, libraries, and the elementary cafeteria.   • Fishing area re-opened down below dam

    Part of the fishing area below Grand Coulee Dam is now open for fishing after nearly 13 years of closure. The area had been closed for the past 13 years due to security issues connected to the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and officially re-opened April 15. To get to the fishing site, people must take the Lone Pine exit from highway 155 to the Downriver Trail Road and park in the designated parking area.     by Roger S. Lucas Two people were recently charged in Grant County Superior Court with first-degree theft for taking copper wire from an area near Grand Coulee Dam last June 18. Charged were Victor W. Ford, a 44-year-old man from Lake Stevens and Michael R. Bruce, a 48-year-old Everett man. Two people out for a walk told police they saw the two pulling copper cable up from the hillside and dumping it on the sidewalk at Riley Point.   • Copter rides coming to Colorama again

    by Roger S. Lucas Helicopter rides will return as one of the added features of Colorama this year. Colorama, May 8-11, will see Lake Roosevelt High School graduate Tim Tueth return to give helicopter rides to those who want an aerial view of the coulee. Tueth graduated from LRHS in 1992, and had lived in the area since he was in the second grade, so it will be like coming home for him.     A new 1,900-foot long pipeline that will provide water service to Sunbanks Lake Resort moved along when Electric City’s council voted April 8 to have Mayor Jerry Sands sign a developer’s agreement to proceed. Sunbanks has selected Mountain View Construction of North Bend to do the work, and city officials stated last week that the project could begin as soon as Gray & Osborne, Electric City’s engineering firm, approves the plans.     Grand Coulee decided Tuesday night to move forward on zoning changes that will permit seniors to build a garage for their two buses, and allow the development of a daycare center, all in the central business district.     Two towns, Coulee Dam and Elmer City, linked together by wastewater treatment issues, plan to go it alone in seeking an alternative analysis to determine how to proceed with a treatment plant plan. Elmer City, moments before the town council met last Thursday, received word from Indian Health Services that the agency plans to fund $27,600 of a feasibility study in regard to wastewater treatment.     The out-with the old and in with the new pavement project in the Grand Coulee area ended up helping Electric City pave one of its newest streets. Electric City received over 50 truckloads of ground up pavement from the Department of Transportation's paving project in Grand Coulee and spread it over Snyder Road.     Riverview Lanes is in the process of being sold. Pat and Sara Zlateff said this week that Sherry Moore, an Electric City resident, will become owner of the eight-lane alley on May 1. Moore still has to work her way through a lease arrangement with the town of Coulee Dam.
