Three Lake Roosevelt High School students were named Gates Millennium Scholars last week.

The three are Brandin Smith, Chyenne Kelly-Marconi and Daniel Campobasso.

The scholarships are given to minority students who come from low-income families and who qualify under an extensive process.

Ten Gates Millennium Scholarships were given in the state of Washington this year, with Lake Roosevelt students given three.

With the three being named this week, that makes a total of 16 Gates scholars from Lake Roosevelt.

Students selected must have at least a 3.3 grade point average.

The scholarships are for four years at the college or university of choice. If scholars decide to continue for advanced degrees, the scholarships can be extended four more years.

The Gates Millennium Scholar program is funded through a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

A complete story about the recipients and where they plan to go for their university studies will appear in next week's Star.
