In spite of all the economic factors pointing in the opposite direction, our Okanogan PUD is pushing ahead with the electrification of Enloe Dam. This decision has no basis in reality and defies common sense. The estimated construction cost of $42.5 million dollars is only just a guess. The commissioners admit they have no idea what the actual cost will be. Whether $45 million, $60 million or even higher, this powerhouse will never pay off the borrowing required to build it. The annual losses of $2 million dollars projected by the PUD make this... Full story
I have vivid memories of our local festival. The week-long wait as a child drove all the kids crazy. Watching day by day as carnival rides showed up and slowly erected themselves into something magical and astounding. Seeing trucks pulling horse trailers arriving to Coulee Country, ending their long journey in Delano, where we would all go to see the cowboys and cowgirls ride the beasts. Then there were the bands, floats and princesses from around the state that would crowd our little streets and delight us on a Saturday morning. That is when... Full story

Lake Roosevelt, Soap Lake, and Tonasket competed in a three-way tiebreaker on neutral ground in Brewster Thursday to determine which two teams would go on to the postseason. Keianna Vera set a personal record with her javelin throw of 91 feet, 7 inches as the Lake Roosevelt track and field team competed in Bridgeport on Friday to compete in their invitational. “The weather deteriorated late in the meet and the throwers were competing into a strong side wind,” Head Coach Lori Adkins said. “While most competitors’ javelins were being carried out of bounds and short, Keianna used a smart strategy and threw a PR! Her efforts were certainly an example of being a competitor no matter the conditions and never giving... Full story

Thirty new campsites at Steamboat Rock State Park will still have to wait to become a reality, with no set date for construction to resume. Currently the area for the new campsites is just a big, empty lot of sand, just as it was left in the fall of 2016. The $2.5-million-dollar project was delayed last fall because of the expiration then of the 2010 Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the State Parks, the Bureau of Reclamation, the Washington State Department of Archaeology Historic Preservation (DAHP), and the Colville Confederated Tribes.... A new sound system was being installed Tuesday in the gym at Lake Roosevelt, including new mixing equipment and a new wireless mic system, just in time for a spring music concert. The new equipment became necessary as the old equipment failed at the high school graduation ceremony last year. The need for new sound equipment was apparent at other events as well, such as a recent visit from Oklahoma politician and artist Enoch Kelly Haney. “It’s rather embarrassing when you pay someone to come in to do a presentation to the kids, and they tra... Every once in a while a student comes along that you wish would never leave. That’s how I feel about “Iron” Angelo Clark. Over the past few years, I have watched this young man go from the average place for students, just getting by, and propel himself to the elite status as a leader within the school. He has matured into a leader on the field, in the classroom and wherever he goes. He has an old soul, and I got to sit down with this outstanding senior at Lake Roosevelt for a chat. “This has been the best year ever.” That is how Angelo st... Full story

First off, a lady very instrumental to my faith passed away last week. Pat Piccolo, whom I consider one of the kindest ladies I have ever had the privilege of being around, was not only instrumental in a lot of people’s lives, but was there when I first gave my life to the Lord. I was working for her husband, Vic, and on many occasions we would return home to her having a warm meal waiting for us. Homemade spaghetti, made with elk burger, will forever be engrained on my taste palate. Along with a huge heart, compassion for those struggling and... Full story

A high speed chase ended on Peter Dan Road when two vehicles, a car and a truck, both crashed into the landslide that spans the road.
