LR was handed its fourth loss in a row last Friday as the Liberty Bell Mountain Lions came to Coulee Dam to lay down a 45-0 walloping on the Raiders. Raider cross country performed like a state contender at the Oroville Invite last Saturday, with all runners posting good times. Raider Head Coach Gary Darnold was pleased, not only by his squad's performance, but also because "for the first time this season, all varsity boys' and girls' runners were back in action," he said. The Raiders dropped their third game in a row last Friday when they lost to the Oroville Hornets 42-14. The loss dropped Lake Roosevelt’s win-loss record to 0-3 in league and 3-4 overall. The Raiders are now tied with Bridgeport for last place in the Central Washington 2B League. The game started slow until Oroville scored its first touchdown with 4:25 left in the first quarter. The Lady Raiders dropped all three of their volleyball matches last week, with the last two decided in three games. At home Oct. 15, the Lady Raiders came out flat against Oroville and flew behind. In the second game, LR showed some spark and tied up the match at one all. Then the momentum swung back to the Hornets in the third game. Down two games to one the Lady Raiders played the Hornets tough in the fourth game where it went tit for tat. In the end, the Hornets had the staying power to claim the victory three games to one. Raider cross country ran its only two-race week of the season as they travelled to Omak Oct. 8 and to Quincy Saturday. At Omak, the Raider boys’ team finished fourth overall with better times from the top five. “We had a very strong team run in Omak with an improvement in time for all, while still keeping our team splits under 2 1/2 minutes,” Head Coach Gary Darnold said. The Lady Raiders travelled to Liberty Bell and Pateros last week. In both cases LR came home with a loss. At Liberty Bell Thursday, the Lady Raiders lost in four games to the Mountain Lions. After losing the first game, the Lady Raiders came back and won the second game before losing the next two. Normally the race is held in Kettle Falls at the National Park Service’s Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area, but with the government shutdown, the race had to be moved to Colville High School. Jess, Hansen champion ropers again in Coeur d’Alene Garrett Jess did it again. He and his partner, Clayton Hansen, won the roping title last weekend at the Pro-West Rodeo Association finals in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The previous week Jess and Hansen won at Prineville, Ore. and were named NPRA “Ropers of the Year.” In Coeur d’Alene the pair placed in both go rounds. Lady Raiders lose to Fillies, beat Trojans by John R. McNeil II The Lady Raiders split last week’s matches at home against the Fillies of Bridgeport and the Manson Trojans. Against the Fillies, the Lady Raiders were out of sync and the Fillies played hard, aggressive volleyball in a match sweep of the Lady Raiders. Last Friday the Raiders held off a fourth quarter comeback by the Liberty Lancers to rack up their third win in a row. This is the longest winning streak by an LR team since 2004. LR has also won as many games this season as they did in 2011 and 2012 combined. The Lady Raiders lost both of their matches last week on the road at Oroville and in Waterville. At Oroville on the 26, the Hornets came out fighting for the win. The Lady Raiders committed 77 errors which gave the Hornets points they needed to win. The end of summer is marked by local county fairs. County fairs provide opportunities for 4-H members to showcase their projects and demonstrate their knowledge of the chosen subject-areas. A $5,700 grant is helping Lake Roosevelt lady basketball players mentor young students from the 3-6 grades. The Lady Raiders are holding three basketball clinics teaching the younger students, about 25 of them, the basics of the game. Two clinics have already been held and the third is scheduled Oct. 2.
