Local kids can work on basketball and more in a clinic with retired basketball great Gary Payton next week. Athletic Director Rich Black said Tuesday afternoon he had just learned the high school gym had been scheduled for a clinic hosted by Payton, who played point guard for the Seattle Sonics for 13 years and won the National Basketball Association championship in 2006 with the Miami Heat. Raider Baseball began the 2016 season with two wins over their Central Washington North 2B League opponent Bridgeport Mustangs. LR jumped out ahead early and stayed ahead of the Mustangs. On the mound, Tyrell Kiser, Devan Black, and Kolby Picard had great outings, picking up many strikeouts while allowing only one run in two games. The Lady Raiders started the 2016 softball season on the right track with two big wins over the Bridgeport Fillies Saturday. At Grand Coulee the Lady Raiders defeated the Fillies in both games by the scores of 18-1 and 17-2. The first game only lasted three innings before mercy rule went into effect, the second went four innings. The wins give the Lady Raiders a two-game lead over half the league. The Raider boys’ tennis squad is off to a 1-0-1 start to the 2016 season. The boys tied Entiat at two matches apiece March 16, then swept the Pateros Billygoats at Pateros on Friday. Lake Roosevelt’s girls’ tennis players started the season with losses in both matches. The girls were swept by both Entiat and Pateros. Raider Track opened the 2016 season in Oroville on the Saturday at a low-key event where many teams were short some athletes and were trying members in different events to find the best combination for them. Okanogan won the meet on both the boys’ and girls’ sides. The Lake Roosevelt boys finished 10th with 15 team points, and the LR girls finished 13th with two team points. With a large team and a little extra help from the community, the Raider Golf program kicked off the season at Moses Pointe Golf Course in Moses Lake March 14 against the Warden Cougars and Moses Lake Christian Lions. The the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has finalized the classification numbers, and new league alignments have emerged in District 6. For Lake Roosevelt, the changes are minor, but the choices of the other schools in certain sports will increase the effect of the changes. The division of the Blue Mountain League during the classification process was the impetus to the big changes in the Central Washington 2B League. The Lake Roosevelt fourth grade girls' basketball team began their season with practices starting in September, then began play in the Moses Lake AAU fourth grade girls' league in late October. After complaints from teams who refused to play them, they were forced to move up to fifth grade after their first game. The Raider boys’ basketball season came to a close Saturday with a big loss in the regional round against Morton-White Pass in Chehalis. This is the third straight year that the Raiders have made it to the regional round on the way to the state tournament and lost. Lake Roosevelt High School is in a new Central Washington 2B league. The new league, made up of many of LR’s competitors, will operate under WIAA sanctions for the next four years, and begin this fall. Athletic Director Richard Black told the school board Monday night that the new league met the district’s goals of less travel and more reasonable competition. Lake Roosevelt senior Jacob Smith led his three Raider wrestling teammates at the state tournament last weekend, coming home with the gold medal at 113 pounds and a place in the books as a state champion. And freshman Tony Nichols took the bronze in the 132-pound bracket. It was Smith's second medal from the big Mat Classic in Tacoma; last year he placed fourth at 113. The Raider boys will move on to the regional tournament as the number-four seed from District 5-6, following an overtime loss in a record-breaking, high-point game to Mabton Saturday night in East Wenatchee. The Lady Raiders' season came to an end last week as the Tonasket Tigers won in overtime 60-56 at the District 5-6 tournament in East Wenatchee. Four Raider wrestlers earned a trip to the Tacoma Dome for the Mat Classic as they qualified at the end of the Central Washington Regional Tournament Saturday. Jacob Smith and Renford Sanchez came home from the Central Washington South District Tournament with gold medals. In the 113-pound weight, Smith defeated Gary Rios-Lopez of Kittitas by pin, then in the championship round took on Bryce Martinez of Warden. The first loss Feb. 2 came at home against the number-one Brewster Bears, the next on Feb. 4 in an upset loss to the struggling Okanogan Bulldogs in Okanogan.
