Lake Roosevelt’s track and field team last Thursday in Brewster qualified 14 athletes for the District 5 meet May 22 in Ellensburg.
They missed taking first place as a team by three points, 138-135, to take second to Brewster as Raiders earned championships and set several personal records that night.
“It was a real team effort on a super exciting night where our athletes were scraping for every LR point they could earn,” said head coach Lori Adkins. “They performed PR after PR as many families and fans cheered them on.”
Senior John Cooley qualified for districts with a championship in the 300-meter hurdles with a PR time of 40.95 seconds, setting a new meet record that has stood for almost two decades, Adkins said.
The boys’ 4x100 relay team (Terrell Bush, Eli Broadnax, Caden Portch and Kayman Jordan) took first place in 44.84 and qualified for districts, as did the 4x400 team (Tyler Mills, Ivan Alejandre, Zeke Broadnax, and Jordan).
On the girls’ team, Madelynn Carman made districts in 51.22 seconds when she took second in the 300-meter hurdles, and in the long jump with a 15-1 for second place. Those were each PRs for the junior, as was her sixth place in the 200 in 27.74.
High jumpers Tyler Mills and DC Atkins placed first and third respectively.
Long jumpers Bush and Cooley placed first and fifth.
And triple jumpers Cooley and Zeke Broadnax took first and fourth.
Caden Portch, while sprinting on the 4x100 relay, also placed as a qualifier in both the 1600 and 3200. His 3200 was a PR.
William Labro qualified with a big PR pole vault for fifth.
Chantelle Pakootas hit a PR in the long jump.
Leo Cawston PR’d in the discus.
The District 5 2B Championships will be Thursday, May 22 in Ellensburg at Central Washington University’s Sports Complex at 3:30 p.m. for field events, 4:30 for track. From the district meet, the top six will move on to state championship competition.
