Alumni award scholarships

Grand Coulee High School Alumni Association selected 12 recipients to receive $500 scholarships this year.

Four graduating seniors include Lake Roosevelt High School Valedictorian, Ellie Hansen, who plans to attend WSU for an education in sports medicine, specifically physical therapy. Ellie is the daughter of Steve and Hope Hansen of Coulee Dam.

Seniors from high schools other than Lake Roosevelt eligible on the basis of being direct descendants of a former student of School District 55 include:

Liberty Croutch, the granddaughter of the late Terry (’61) and Diane (’63) Henke Mort, who will pursue a business degree at Occidental College in California, and continue her basketball career at the collegiate level.

Hannah Easterday, granddaughter of Carleta (’65) Rawe Ayling, who plans to attend Montana State University and undertake a course of study that will involve her passion for mathematics.

Christina McCarty, the granddaughter of Robert (’59) and Mary Ann (’60) Dahlen Boll, who will study hospitality and business marketing at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

The eight continuing education award winners include a brother and sister who are direct descendants of one of the earliest alumni of Grand Coulee School District 55, late great-grandmother Dorothy (’41) Clark. Grandparents include Kim (’68) and Debby (’72) Kelly Clark and Lad (’64) and Linda (’69) Campbell Flowers. Jacob Clark will continue his education at Whitworth in the political science department, and his sister, Madison Clark, will be a sophomore at the University of Washington, where she is studying business administration.

Nicole Coppersmith, the granddaughter of the late Margaret (’51) Rice Kendall, is a student at Washington State University Spokane campus, a part of the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences. She is working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences to enable her to continue on for a Master of Science degree that will qualify her as a speech-language pathologist.

Zachary Hellie, the grandson of Marjorie (’61) Trefry Hellie, will be a senior this fall at Nebraska Wesleyan University where he is a member of the football and track teams. He is double majoring in Business Administration and Sports Management and will graduate in December with his bachelor’s degree.

Alicia Johnson, granddaughter of Lonna (’62) Bussert, will be a junior at Washington State University in the fall. She is working on a double major in Accounting and Finance for her degree from the Carson School of Business. She is working toward passing the exam to become a Certified Public Accountant.

Kerin Ludwig, daughter of Felix (Faculty) and Elizabeth (’58) Glick Marcolin, is in the Accounting Program of the Carson School of Business at Washington State University, and is also in the German language program. Her goal is to major in both International Accounting and German for the Professions and to utilize both degrees working in International Accounting.

Janine Ludwig, granddaughter of Felix and Elizabeth Marcolin, is a student at Spokane Falls Community College Pullman campus. Her goal is to continue on at Washington State University after earning her Associate degree and become a labor and delivery RN or a midwife.

Ryan Marcolin, grandson of Felix and Elizabeth Marcolin, is majoring in ecology with a minor in fish and wildlife management at the University of Montana Western Dillon. This will be Ryan’s fourth season as a wildland firefighter. After he earns his degree, he hopes to continue work with the U. S. Forest Service in the field of biology.
