Electric City has taken more of its “butt ugly” trees out. City work crews have removed several trees that hinder the vision of motorists coming onto SR-155 from city side streets. The city council, back in March 2013, authorized the removal of a number of what then-councilmember Brad Parrish called “butt ugly” trees. The trees were planted several years ago by longtime mayor Ray Halsey, and lined both sides of the city’s main thoroughfare. They grew up fast, and many of the trees are now mature and about 10 feet tall. At critical intersect...

Coulee Dam utility customer charges for sewage treatment will likely rise $5-$6 a month to around $61-$62 per household equivalent when the town builds its new wastewater treatment plant, Mayor Greg Wilder told the town council at its Aug. 9 meeting. Construction is beginning on the $7.7 million project now with the contractor on site. Wilder said if Elmer City decides to build its own plant in eight years, when a contract between the two towns ends, the ERU (Equivalent Resident Unit) rate Coulee Dam residents would pay would rise to about...

Grand Coulee’s city council accepted the recommendation of its planning commission in dealing with the dog rescue issue that has been going back and forth in the community. Planners had told Harris on several occasions that she couldn’t have a dog rescue operation in a residential neighborhood. The council had earlier support...

At the mayor’s meeting a motion was made to accept the lone bid of $54,904, made by DWK Fowler Construction. It died for a lack of a second. It may be dead for a long time. At the end of the meeting, mayors w...

Dorothy Harris and her sister-in-law Dee Harris argued the finer points of the city’s zoning code during some heated discussions, but in the end they can say it isn’t over until it‘s over. The two told planners that they no longer want to pursue a “dog rescue” operation, and in fact, Dorothy Harris said, “We no longer have a dog rescue” operation. Planners also softened their position, though not backing...

With the impending solar eclipse very close, it's nice to know the science of what is happening; humanity doesn't react to the old mythologies that surrounded past solar or lunar eclipse events. The scientific explanation of what we see has brought us beyond the myths. Many cultures have explained eclipses - solar or lunar - as animals consuming either the sun or the moon, or that demons are the culprits. The Viking sky wolves are a favorite of mine. My Viking ancestors saw a pair of wolves in t...

The reason for the name change is that the current name, Colvi...

You can almost hear the ground gasping with a slow, agonizing, parched voice, pleading for some water. A bit dramatic, I guess. Certainly, it has been dry around and in the Coulee. There were some recent isolated showers here and there, nothing to have any real effect. My home weather station hasn’t recorded any precipitation for 59 days as of this writing. Feast or famine, they say. For the month of July, I’ve measured two days exceeding the 100˚F mark — on the 6th, at 101.7˚F, and on the 7th, with 103.8˚. The low for the month was on the 1...
