The discussion touched on some of the ramifications of making such a change, including how it would affect childcare and how long it would extend the school day. Although clear answers on these q...

The topic was discussed at the Oct. 14 Regional Board of Mayors meeting of three mayors, a city administrator, a concerned citizen, the transfer station operator, and a Sunrise Disposal owner who was on the phone. Kim Christensen of Grand Coulee raised the topic,...

Alan Cain has served on the Grand Coulee City Council for about a year-and-a-half, ever since being appointed to the seat vacated by a previous council member. He's running to keep that seat. Cain moved to the city in 1992 and worked as a registered nurse at the hospital. Then, as the internet was rapidly evolving, he started a company to provide that service for several years. Retired now, Cain, also a cartographer, has put his city planning skills to use on Grand Coulee's Planning Commission,...
Tracy Wright says she decided to run for city council in Grand Coulee after the city violated her and her partner's Fourth Amendment rights. She and her partner, Cameron Whitney, who is running for mayor, had a disagreement with the city over their use of a recreational vehicle parked in their backyard with a lake view, which was advertised on a short-term stay website. "Since we are members of this community, we decided to try to change things within instead of the tried and true method of suin...
Reniff Herndon will fix what's wrong on the track and field facility the local high school team uses to practice, hopefully this year, for his eagle scout project. Herndon will address recent changes handed down from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association that changed standards for the long jump and shot put pits, placing those at the former middle school in Grand Coulee out of compliance. If he can't get it done before the end of 2019, he'll get the corrections made before the...
What if every weekend were a three-day weekend for students and staff at Lake Roosevelt Schools? If a four-day week were implemented, how would that affect childcare? How would that affect school days? The topic was discussed at the Oct. 15 Grand Coulee Dam School District board meeting. Numerous ramifications were discussed, but the consensus was to take the pulse of those who would be affected. Superintendent Paul Turner noted that the Bureau of Reclamation has already been on a four-day work week, and that the Colville Tribes have recently... Full story

"How do we cut $400,000?" Turner asked. "I've been thinking through it pretty strongly." Turner said he's been coming up with a list of items to potentially be cut, and he wants the board to let him know wh...

Steffens, a registered nurse, is in charge of...
People may note a bit more of pinch when they haul that Saturday load to the dump, beginning next summer when prices go up slightly. The Regional Board of Mayors last week approved a raise in transfer station dumping rates from 6.2 cents a pound to 6.7 cents. City Administrator of Electric City, Russ Powers, who prepared a proposed budget for the RBOM, said the income of the transfer station simply isn’t matching up with the expenditures. “It’s just the cost of things,” Powers said. “Insurance, fuel, goods. More and more people are maybe drivin...
