    Want a book about Grand Coulee Dam or the Nez Perce? If so, the Visitor Center at Grand Coulee Dam is a great place to go. The new "Discover Your Northwest" bookstore is located just within the lobby of the Visitor Center and is there under special arrangements with the National Park Service and the Bureau of Reclamation. Discover Your Northwest specializes in things about the five Pacific Northwest states and is an extension of a bookstore that used to be in the NPS offices in Coulee Dam.... Full story

    North Central Regional Library has announced the Fall 2015 Columbia River Reads book, "The Mockingbird Next Door," by Marja Mills. In Mills's memoir, she recounts her time living next door to the enigmatic author of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Go Set a Watchman," Harper Lee, and her sister, Alice Lee. The book gives great insights into Harper Lee's life and of the town and its inhabitants that inspired "To Kill a Mockingbird."   • Park service will pull in quilt show for centennial

    The National Park Service here has landed a traveling quilt show for July 1-4, 2016, as part of a celebration of its 100th anniversary. Administrative Officer Janet Valen at the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area said the traveling exhibit has 177 quilts depicting the flora, fauna and landscape of the country’s 59 major national parks. Quilts depict subject matter from Arcadia to the U.S. Virgin Islands, from Gates of the Arctic to American Samoa and others in between.     Grand Coulee 8/17 - A person gave police a large plastic bag containing drugs and drug-smoking devices found in the roadway. The materials field-tested as methamphetamines and all materials were sent to the state crime lab for identification and possible fingerprints. - It was reported that a male who was suspected of a crime was seen. He was gone when police arrived. - A man reported that there was a vehicle at Crown Point that was flashing its lights on and off.     Grand Coulee Police 8/10 - Some juveniles were banned from a residence on “D” Street at the owner’s request. - A woman evicted from a trailer park on Mead Avenue made a 911 call, then later was charged with obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest. She was taken to Grant County Jail. 8/11 - Police responded to a woman’s call for help but it couldn’t be determined where the call was coming from.     First, let’s do a recap of temperatures and precipitation for July. I recorded four days with a high in excess of 100°F. July 2, 3, 4, and 31 were all above 100°F. The high for the month was on the 3rd at 104.1°F. Our low of the month was on the 26th at 52.3°F. My data shows that just about half the month of July was 90°F or above. The home weather station recorded a mean of 78.1°F which was 5.1° above the all-time mean for the month, at 73.0°F. No records broken for July, as the all-time high was in 1939 at 113°F.
