Lester was born in Gregory, South Dakota, to Lester L. Filion and Laura E. Filion. Smoke that could be smelled in the air locally on Sunday night was likely from the Taylor Pond Fire, burning 12 miles east of Yakima, about 150 miles away, and having burned about 35,000 acres of grassland as of Tuesday.
