    1 Years Ago Two girls were rescued from the Coulee Wall Friday by Grand Coulee Fire Department. The two 12-year-olds had been climbing the wall in the afternoon against their grandmother's advice and when they tried to climb down became trapped on a ledge. A longtime teacher and educator Karen Tiegs Whitaker died Tuesday following an illness.     Hundreds of kids from 1 to 10 years of age cleaned the middle school athletic field of thousands of plastic eggs in mere minutes Saturday. Ludolph Field at Grand Coulee Dam Middle School sported about 2,500 colored plastic eggs containing candy or prizes planted there by the Lions Club. Cordoned off for four age groups, each starting at separate times, the field was cleared of eggs in four minutes.     Grand Coulee Police 4/14 - A woman told police that she had been visiting with another person when the phone went dead. She said she was worried that the other party might have a medical problem.     Bert lived a full, active life filled with family and friends. He was known for his gregarious friendly nature; speaking to everyone he met, judging none. He was a devoted husband and father. Helen, his wife of 68 years, and their four children were the center of his life. Bert was the eldest son of Alfred and Colby Johnson, born in Sebeka, Minn. In 1941, he joined the Army Air Corps and served in the 320th Bomb Group B-26 Marauder.     Grand Coulee decided Tuesday night to move forward on zoning changes that will permit seniors to build a garage for their two buses, and allow the development of a daycare center, all in the central business district. The council held a public hearing on the zoning changes Tuesday night and two individuals spoke favorable on the changes. Susan Dechant, a researcher who lives near Colville, will bring the council up to date on the memorial that once stood near Delano and then was confiscated for non-payment and relocated on the Stevens County Courthouse grounds.     OK, sometimes when I look around the Coulee I see things or hear things, and I cannot help but dwell on these things for a while and just think. For example, “I won’t buy a house below the dam. What if the dam breaks?” I always laugh a little on the inside when I hear this. This dam is not going anywhere.     A Nespelem woman has taken her four children out of the school there and enrolled them in the Grand Coulee Dam District because of a pellet gun incident. Charity Carson said Tuesday that her 9-year-old was threatened by a 13-year-old student armed with a pellet gun while riding the school bus home in the afternoon, in mid-March.     The Colville Tribes, under a contract awarded March 10, began providing law enforcement coverage Tuesday on the east side of the Columbia River for Bureau of Reclamation lands and facilities. The law enforcement coverage on this portion of the Grand Coulee Dam Project and lands was formerly provided by the town of Coulee Dam. A Friday press release stated the award was for $697,000.     Officials from the town of Coulee Dam traveled to Colville last Thursday to look at a monument that was originally located here in 1938 to honor those who died during construction of Grand Coulee Dam. The monument was relocated to the Stevens County Court House lawn because of non-payment of the $1,750 bill. It's currently Stevens County veterans memorial.
