Sixty-Five Years Ago Three-year-old Mildred Brown shows a string of silver trout dipped from the river below the falls by her father. Every spring there is a "Silver" downstream migration at the dam. Thousands of trout are injured in their sudden descent through or over the 350-foot dam and are easily netted by the local residents. - April 14, 1949

10 Years Ago

Two girls were rescued from the Coulee Wall Friday by Grand Coulee Fire Department. The two 12-year-olds had been climbing the wall in the afternoon against their grandmother's advice and when they tried to climb down became trapped on a ledge.

A longtime teacher and educator Karen Tiegs Whitaker died Tuesday following an illness. Grand Coulee School District decided to honor her 31 years of teaching local children by closing school Monday in her honor.

The Coulee Dam Council voted to fill in the pool that has been vacant the last 10 years and was built in the 1930's. Renovating the pool has been an option under discussion at the Park and Recreation District's meetings since it's inception.

20 Years Ago

Jeremy Hansen, Shane Moore and Greg Evans were all named top in their class for this years upcoming graduation. Evans and Moore will be co-Valedictorians and Hansen will be the Salutatorian. The co-leaders in their class both had a 4.0 GPA and Hansen had 3.939, all three considered strong leaders in their class and have bright futures ahead of them.

An Elmer City man was found dead Saturday morning apparently from a single stab wound. His live-in companion has been arrested and charged with his death, all according to Tribal Police Chief John Goss.

Jared Stauffer received two honors this week, the first was earning his Eagle Scout award. The second was being named the top student artist in the Grand Coulee Dam Area Federated Women's Club art competition. Jared is a senior at Lake Roosevelt High School.

30 years Ago

On Saturday some area Girl Scouts gathered at Coulee Comprehensive Hospital for their Arbor Day Celebration. They planted three flowering trees and two evergreen shrubs in front of the building. Taking part in the planting were: Shonita Ratcliff, Angie Gross, Denise Day, Liesl Bischoff, Melissa Green, Erin Shumate, Sherelle Ratcliff, Jenny Edinger and Angie Edinger.

On Friday, the first annual spelling bee was completed and six finalists vied for the championship. The winner was Jasmine Paul and the runner up was Alicia McKissen. The four other finalists were: Eli Krohn, Cheryl Kosowicz, Tim Hare and Scott Wilson.

40 Years Ago

Frank Parker was named new Police Chief in Grand Coulee this week. He comes with extensive experience in Bellevue, Wash., Hawaii and in the military. He is looking forward to getting out and meeting new people and taking advantage of the weather and water in the area.

Tom Goodwin of Coulee Dam placed second in the National Greco-Roman Wrestling Tournament in Omaha, Neb., this month. He is now invited to wrestle in a 10-nation tournament to be held in Italy for the world titles. Goodwin is a senior at Lake Roosevelt High School.

50 Years Ago

The Friday night Sportsman Bowling League has finished its third season and a few bowlers from the area were named "Outstanding Bowlers" they are: Pat Morin, Jack Barnard, Claude Bjorson, John Loop, Dan Renteria, Ray Verstrate, Dwayne Johnson and Lee Wolf.

Nancy Button won the Loepps Furniture coloring contest last week. She had the best colored Easter Egg and won a five dollar prize.
