  • Rodeo declared a great success

    The Colorama Pro-West Rodeo was a great success, according to Ridge Riders President George Kohout. "I think it was one of the best rodeos we have had here for a long time," Kohout said early this week. The "Rattlesnake Saloon" lived up to its name again this year and rodeo hands had to dispatch a rattlesnake that wandered into the refreshment tent. That's the second time this has occurred.   • Pathway discussion set for Saturday

    Electric City will hold the first of two planned community meetings to discuss its plan for a Pathway Trail through the city. The full topic will be parks, recreation and revitalization. The meeting will be from 1-4 p.m., Saturday, May 14, in the Veteran’s Hall in Electric City. The public is invited to participate by offering ideas they might have about any possible trail system.   • Report: 701 tons of garbage produced

    Grand Coulee won hands down the blue ribbon for producing the highest tonnage of garbage for 2015, a Sunrise Disposal report to the Regional Board of Mayors indicated. The disposal company reported that it picked up 700.77 tons of garbage in Grand Coulee last year. Coulee Dam was a close second, with Electric City third and Elmer City fourth. The four municipalities together operate the Delano Transfer station through the RBOM. Sunrise presented their report at Monday’s meeting of the mayors.   • Students head to Tall Timbers next week

    About 60 sixth graders from Lake Roosevelt Elementary and Nespelem Schools will be trekking to the Tall Timber Ranch, near Leavenworth, next week. Sixth graders from the two schools have been going to the ranch for the past several years to learn about teamwork and outdoor experiences.   • Hensley says her piece, gets "admonished"

    An Electric City councilmember was admonished by the full council at a special public hearing last Wednesday night for activities judged to be beyond her authority. Reprimanded was Councilmember Birdie Hensley, who became a member of the council for the second time this last January. The mayor, John Nordine II, asked councilmembers Aaron Derr, Brad Parrish, Lonna Bussert, and Richard McGuire, to vote to reprimand Hensley in a public hearing that she had called for.     Colville Tribal members go to the polls Saturday to vote on 28 contenders for positions on the Colville Business Council. The primary vote will reduce candidates for each contended office to two who will face off in the general election in June. Poll voting will begin at 8 a.m. Certification of poll voting will be held at 10 a.m., on May 9. Absentee ballots will be certified May 12.   • Port District taking another look at projects

    The idea of a trailer park and residential development along the Banks Lake Golf Course has surfaced again. Grant County Port District 7 commissioners raised the topic at their meeting last week as they wrestled with how to continue financing the operation of their 18-hole golf course. Both ideas were thought to be viable projects back in 2012, but the financial times put an end to any kind of new development along the golf course.     It will soon be toe-tapping time at Sunbanks Lake Resort. It’s nearly Rhythm & Blues Festival time at the resort on the shores of Banks Lake in Electric City.     An ombudsman hearing to review evidence in the case of a former Grant County Mosquito District 2 clerk, previously scheduled for Tuesday, April 26, has been re-scheduled to June 21, the prosecutor’s office reported. The clerk, Karyn M. Byam, 40, an Electric City resident, has been charged with theft and misappropriation of funds, totaling $129,834.     A public hearing will be held tonight for an Electric City council member who wants to answer her reprimand in public. The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, April 27) in the city council chambers.     There is a new major event for Colorama this year, because another major feature won't be appearing. Jump N2 Fun, a firm that features a host of inflatable slides and bounce houses, will replace the carnival this year and will be located at Banks Lake Park, just south of North Dam Park.     There will be free health screenings available for the general public here April 28. The Grand Coulee Lions Club, in cooperation with Coulee Medical Center, will have the Northwest Lions Foundation mobile screening unit on hospital grounds from 12 to 6 p.m. Screenings for blood pressure, glaucoma, diabetes, sight and hearing will be available, free for all local residents interested.     Electric City is hosting a community workshop, led by Washington State University’s Rural Communities Design Initiative. The meeting, one of two being planned, will run from 1-4 p.m., Saturday, May 14, in the Veterans Center in Electric City. The second such meeting date hasn’t yet been set.     A pit bull that attacked and bit an Electric City woman who was walking her dog has been declared “dangerous” by the Grand Coulee City Council. The dog, named Rocky, described as “huge” by the victim, was finally subdued by police and quarantined for 10 days on a rabies check. The victim, Angie M. Nomee, 49, told police she was walking her dog on Center Street when Rocky came out and attacked her dog, an Australian shepherd, and then attacked her when she tried to help her dog.   • Sidewalk work underway in Elmer City

    Elmer City residents will soon be able to walk to the post office on new sidewalks. They will also be able to cross SR-155 on a new lighted crosswalk. It’s all part of a Washington State Transportation Improvement Board grant that the town got. The project is well underway, with DWK Fowler Construction doing the work. Lucas Students at a number of area schools will see this Friday, Earth Day, how well they did in a recycling contest as results of a Colville Tribes challenge are unveiled during Earth Day celebrations at the powwow grounds Friday, April 22.   • Herndon selected for vice principal

    Mark Herndon was selected by the school board Monday night to become vice principal at Lake Roosevelt Junior and Senior High School. Herndon is currently principal of Clallam Bay, a K-12 school in the Cape Flattery School District at Sekiu, Washington, and will take over his new duties here next fall. He replaces Paul Turner who will become superintendent of the Grand Coulee Dam School District July 1. Herndon has been in his present position for three years.   • Credit card thief buys Band-Aids and more cards

    National Park Service officials reported to police that someone had prowled a vehicle and took a purse with two credit cards inside, which they later tried to use at the Safeway store in Grand Coulee. The vehicle prowl occurred within the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area.     Residents of Electric City could receive a Parks and Trails Survey as early as this week. The survey asks more than 20 questions about how residents view their city and what their needs are for the future.     A Lake Stevens man led Grand Coulee police officers on a chase and withstood getting hit with tasers at least four times Monday morning before finally being subdued.
