A local man wanted in the burglary of his grandparent’s house was found in a house on Burdin Boulevard and arrested, police reported. Michael S. Snyder II, 26, was taken to Grant County Jail on April 1. In addition to the burglary charge, Snyder faces the additional charges of trying to escape and resisting arrest. Police said they’d been looking for Snyder after identifying him as the person who broke into the home of Milton Snyder, his grandfather, on Miller Avenue in Electric City, March 7, and on another occasion the same month. The town of Coulee Dam is taking a comprehensive park survey to determine the use of its parks and how and where the community would like to see improvements. The survey is due at town hall on April 8, and if you don’t have a copy of the survey, there’s still time to get one and participate in it. Copies are available at town hall. POWER has a new fish pens manager in Electric City. Bill Hancock, who lives near the fish pens, volunteered to handle those duties at the annual meeting of the group March 24 at the Grand Coulee Dam Senior Center. The future of the fish pens was in doubt going into the meeting, with POWER President Carl Russell indicating that he planned to step down after 25 years. Thieves should think twice about breaking into the Banks Lake Golf Course office. Grant County Port District 7, which manages the course, has installed 10 security cameras. Commissioner Jerry Sands, who installed the security cameras, said that there are five outside and five inside. Former NBA great Gary Payton, will hold a basketball camp Thursday, at Lake Roosevelt High School gym. The sports action will be mixed with a Payton message on life skills and how to build a productive life. The event is being put on by the Colville Tribes and is open to children in two age categories, 5-12, and 13-18. The grand prize for this year’s chamber of commerce fourth annual Triple Fish Challenge, fittingly, is something that will make fishing easier for the winner. Coulee Dam will receive official word on its loan application for its wastewater treatment plant April 19, according to town officials. Representatives from USDA Rural Development will meet with town officials at noon at town hall to make an official announcement about the loan. Town officials said Tuesday they haven’t received word on the amount of the loan due to calculations that are still being made. Dates for a getaway that brings together students from Nespelem and Lake Roosevelt schools are set for May and a fundraiser is planned for April. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board set dates for the Tall Timber Ranch trip for sixth-graders from Nespelem Elementary and from Lake Roosevelt Elementary at its meeting Monday night. The sixth graders will go to the Leavenworth retreat for three days and two nights of adventure and physical testing. The Grand Coulee Dam School District school board approved the purchase of a 2001 Suburban at its meeting Monday night. The vehicle has 71,000 miles on it and the purchase price is $9,386. Prior to the decision to purchase the nine-passenger vehicle, the district rented it from Practical Rent a Car, in Grand Coulee, when school officials were scheduled to go to education meetings around the state. Police say a local man has been identified with a security camera as the person breaking into a residence on Miller Avenue in Electric City. Michael Snyder II, 26, was identified as the person breaking into the home of his grandfather, Milton A. Snyder. It was the second time in a month that the grandson had allegedly entered his grandfather’s house. His father, Michael S. Tourism interests expressed heated frustration with Electric City's council in a meeting last Thursday at Sunbanks Resort, frustration to the point of hiring a lawyer. The meeting, organized by the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce, included members of its board of directors and several lodging businesses in the area that collect a tax on tourists, which the city has decided to spend on a pathway project. An Electric City woman walking her dog near the Methodist Church in Grand Coulee was attacked and bitten by a "huge" pit bull March 14. Angela M. Nomee, 49, told police that she saw the dog but didn't think it was going to move from where it was; then suddenly it struck her, knocking her to the ground, and attacked her dog, Ginger, tearing a hole in its shoulder. Electric City and Grand Coulee have both “lawyered up” over a dispute about arsenic treatment charges. Grand Coulee has paid for the charges since September 2014, but hasn’t paid for charges from 2013 to the September date in 2014. Grand Coulee City Clerk Carol Boyce said the city has referred the matter to its attorney and that it doesn’t feel charges that have been made for 2013 and part of 2014, prior to a formal agreement, need to be paid. A Lincoln County man was arrested Saturday, March 19, after allegedly firing a gun in the vicinity of two federal employees doing survey work near his home. Arrested was Jason J. Schimek, 39, who resides on Rainbow Lane. He has a Grand Coulee address. Lincoln County Sheriff Wade Magers said Schimek posted bail and was released shortly after being processed. An Electric City council member has asked for a public hearing after being reprimanded by city authorities during a city retreat in January. Birdie Hensley asked for a public hearing so the matter would become public, and she recently sent out invitations to a number of people asking them to attend the hearing. Hensley was reprimanded by other council members and Mayor John Nordine II, after she had communicated with various agencies by email suggesting that her inquiries were officially on behalf of the entire council. Some 63 people associated with the City of Grand Coulee will get Medstar memberships as a way for the city to say thank you to them. Getting memberships are city staff, elected officials and volunteers. The city council approved the measure at its last meeting, subject to getting an okay from the city’s attorney. City clerk Carol Boyce said this week that Grand Coulee is moving forward with the plan. The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce named its "Achiever of Year" and "Business of the Year" at a special awards luncheon last Thursday at the Moose Lodge. The chamber membership chooses the honorees through a ballot process. The "Achiever of the Year" is Debbie Bigelow, chief executive officer at Coulee Medical Center. A number of school elementary students are taking part in the Colville Tribal recycling program. The contest is on, with students from Nespelem, Lake Roosevelt, Keller, Inchelium and Paschal Sherman competing to see which school can collect the most plastic number-one and -two bottles before Earth Day, April 22. Banks Lake Golf Course is offering a special reduced price through its punch card program this season. Port District 7 officials, who manage the course, said last week that the new punch card program is designed to save golfers money and to encourage people to play the 18-hole course. The punch cards are good for both nine-hole and 18-hole play. Play six times for nine holes, and punch card users will get one free nine-hole play. Electric City will continue to fix up city hall this year. The city plans to paint city hall, add a stone wainscotting, put up a new logo sign and redo the air conditioning system. The city has put $49,000 in this year’s budget for the upgrades and repairs. In past recent years the city has put in carpeting, painted the inside, upgraded its council room, and made other repairs. The Electric City council has moved forward on developing a parks and recreation plan for the city. The council authorized city planner Kurt Danison to move forward by voting up to $5,000 to develop the plan. Danison had noted that the development of the plan will include three public meetings to gather input from residents.
