The Lady Raiders chalked up two more in the win column this past week, defeating both the Bridgeport Fillies as well as the Waterville Lady Shockers. The Lady Raiders beat the Fillies by 50 points in Coulee Dam Jan. 2, with a final score of 73-23. Head Coach Wallace Pleasants said their performance was in part due to improvements made over winter break competing against bigger schools in the Eagle Holiday Classic in Spokane. "The thing we learned in Spokane was as long as you move your feet,...

  • Finally telling the stories of those who died on the dam

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 3, 2018

Arthur A. French, 39, of New Jersey, was crushed by a concrete block he was stripping in 1937 while working on the Grand Coulee Dam to help support his mother and siblings through the Great Depression. Between the 1930s and the 1980s, at least 82 workers died at the Grand Coulee Dam site, and are now getting more recognition, thanks in part to the efforts of Jacob Miller, who works at the Visitor Center, and Susan Dechant, a researcher for the Northeast Washington Genealogical Society. Miller, w...

  • Winter Solstice has passed - now more daylight

    Bob Valen|Jan 3, 2018

With the passage of Winter Solstice, we will start gaining more daylight. It’s not that noticeable; it’s measured initially in about one minute each day, and that’s at sunset. When we arrive at mid-January, we begin to see good gain in daylight on both ends — sunrise and sunset. Example: Dec. 22, 2017 — sunrise at 7:43 a.m., sunset at 4:06 p.m.; Jan. 15, 2018 — sunrise at 7:41 a.m., sunset at 4:31 p.m. Think of all the things you can get done outside with all the extra light. (Insert smi...

  • Net neutrality repeal not a big factor locally, so far

    Jacob Wagner|Dec 27, 2017

A recent topic in the national news has been the repeal of “net neutrality” rules which restrained internet service providers (ISPs) from charging consumers more for access to certain websites, and from charging websites more for faster download speeds for their sites. The repeal has people nationwide worried that their internet bill could go up and be comparable to satellite and cable television services which bundle their channels and charge more money for access to certain channels. Micah Seekins, operations manager at Coulee Internet Ser...

    Jacob Wagner|Dec 27, 2017

The Lady Raiders beat the Fillies by 50 with a final score of 73-23 before the Raiders pulled off a comeback victory in overtime against the Mustangs 77-74. These videos show Kayla St. Pierre with a steal and a layup, drawing the foul (she made the free throw), and Trevor McCraigie hitting a big three in overtime to go up 77-74, leaving only a few seconds left on the clock which Bridgeport wasn't able to do anything with. The nail biter LR victory was something you'd have to see to believe....

  • Million wreaths across America

    Don C. Brunell|Dec 20, 2017

Christmas is an especially difficult time for anyone grieving for lost loved ones. It is especially painful for America’s military families whose son, daughter, spouse or parent was killed while serving in uniform. Normally, the fallen are remembered on Memorial Day, but thanks to a Maine family and over hundreds of thousands of donors and volunteers, more than 1.5 million wreaths were laid on the tombstones of our fallen soldiers, sailors and airmen on December 16. The panoramic view of Arlington National Cemetery’s rolling hills with its whit...

  • A call for local electric car chargers

    Jacob Wagner|Dec 13, 2017

Grand Coulee, a pioneer of green energy because of the dam, may take another step towards a green future by installing an electric vehicle charger, which is also being advocated as a tourism booster. Marlene Oddie, owner of KISSed Quilts in Grand Coulee, is interested in installing an electric vehicle (EV) charging port near her business. Oddie said the process takes a lot of time to do right, but once installed would then put the Grand Coulee Dam area on the map for tourists with electric...

  • And the snow fell, a little

    Bob Valen|Dec 13, 2017

Early November teased us a little bit with measurable snowfall that apparently has stalled. Not to worry, ski fans and snow junkies, it will snow again. I spent some time looking at what winter may look like here in the Coulee. The discussions about La Niña, a recurring event that has a direct result on global weather, are stating some weaknesses, with “only a 65-75 percent chance that it will continue at least through the winter. Similar to last winter, the event is predicted to be re...

"It was just one of those games, back and forth," Head Coach Wallace "Peewee" Pleasants said. "We had a two-minute stretch where we had six turnovers in a row and went from a four-point game to a 16-point game. Once we got that corrected, we just weren't able to close that gap."
