Raider wrestlers competed in the Brewster mixer and the Warden tournament this past week, as well as sending their female wrestler to Springdale for a girls’ wrestling event.

Ida Sue went to Springdale Jan. 5, going 2-1 against her opponents. She pinned a West Valley wrestler, got pinned by a Quincy wrestler, but then pinned another Quincy opponent. “It was a good outing for her,” Lake Roosevelt Head Coach Steve Hood said.

The wrestlers went to Warden for their Jan. 6 tournament, where LR placed fourth out of nine teams with 94.5 points. Tonasket won the event, tallying up 234.5 points with their many wrestlers.

Tony Nichols was the one Raider who took first place at the event, wrestling in the 152-pound division. Nichols defeated Haworth from Warden by a 7-2 decision, then Walton from Tonasket with an 8-2 decision.

“Both of these were quality wrestlers. Those were good wins,” Hood noted.

Kaleb Horn took second at 138, making it to the finals but losing 7-5 against Long from Tonasket.

“It was a good match, and he wrestled well,” Hood said. “It was tied 5-5, and the Tonasket guy scored two points with about 30 seconds left and Kaleb wasn’t able to score again. Time ran out.”

Wrestling at 106, Robert Thomas secured a third-place spot. Thomas first wrestled Townsend from Columbia-Burbank and lost 8-5, won his second match against West from Warden, then faced off against Townsend again.

“He worked on what wasn’t working before … and won 6-1, so that was a good turnaround for him,” Hood said.

Wrestling at 160, Dylan Wiles Lost 2-0 against Dominguez of Warden, but pinned Contreras from Riverview one minute, five seconds into the second round to secure the third-place spot.

Wrestling at 170, Moses Luevano pinned Naef of Connell in the third round before losing a 4-3 decision against Gonzales of Warden. Luevano then won 8-7 in a close match against Liberty Bell’s Garcia to get the fourth-place spot in the weight class. “That was a good match,” Hood said.

Sherwin Vargas, wrestling at 220, lost 5-3 to Moa from Mt. Baker, then pinned Columbia-Burbank’s Worcott in 27 seconds, then lost to Moa again, 11-6, placing fourth.

Wrestling at 195, Brandon Long pinned his opponent, Enriquez from Connell, but lost his other two matches, placing 6th in the division.

Other Raiders wrestlers at the event were Isaiah Marconi and Everett Schmidt; both lost their matches but gained experience nonetheless.

“The majority of these guys, I was really happy with how they wrestled,” Hood said.

The Raiders went to Brewster Jan. 4, for a mix and match with wrestlers from LR, Brewster, Oroville, Okanogan, and Liberty Bell. “We won some and lost some. It was a chance to get out of the practice room,” said Hood.

Results were unavailable for the event except for the lady wrestler, Ida Sue, who won both of her matches there, according to Hood.

The Raider wrestlers next event is the Sgt. Norton Memorial Tournament in Rainier at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13.
