  • North Korean guest workers booted

    Don C. Brunell|Jan 31, 2018

It’s not good to be a North Korean guest worker these days. As part of stepped-up sanctions against the rogue nation’s accelerated nuclear and ballistic missile development programs, countries around the world are expelling North Koreans. They are being sent back to an impoverished country, which continues to spend the bulk of its money on sophisticated weapons systems. North Korea is a nation where over 70 percent of its citizens have no electricity, over 125,000 are imprisoned, and food and jobs are scarce. Its dictator sends conscripted wor...

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 31, 2018

The Lady Raiders had a busy week, defeating the Tigers, losing a close one to Omak in a non-league game, demolishing Bridgeport, and losing to Brewster. Hosting the Tonasket Lady Tigers on Jan. 23, the Lady Raiders won with a final score of 53-39. "That was a win that we definitely needed," said Head Coach Wallace Pleasants. • Raider wrestlers mix and match at home, get ready for districts tourney

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 31, 2018

The league mix and match was held in Coulee Dam on Saturday, with all six teams from the Central Washington 2B league in attendance: Lake Roosevelt, Oroville, Tonasket, Brewster, Pateros, and Liberty Bell. The event helped give wrestlers the chance to face off with league opponents they haven't wrestled yet, and also helps coaches determine seeding for the districts tournament in Oroville. Not everyone wrestled, Head Coach Steve Hood said, "but the ones that needed to did. Some got one match,...

  • Local effects of the federal government shutdown explored

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 24, 2018

Most of the federal government shutdown at midnight on Friday, before reopening on Monday night, raising the question of how our local-area federal agencies were affected, and how they would be affected in the event of another shutdown. Lynne Brougher, public affairs officer of the Grand Coulee Power Office for the Bureau of Reclamation, said that the Grand Coulee Dam is not affected by a shutdown. “Because the majority of our funding for Grand Coulee Dam is not congressionally appropriated, a government shutdown does not impact Grand Coulee Da...

  • Trump used common sense in shutdown

    Rob Coffman|Jan 24, 2018

In 2013, the Federal Government shut down for 16 days. What that meant for those of us wishing to access our very own Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area (LRNRA) at that time was nothing short of unbelievable. Operating under a Contingency Plan for a lapse in funding developed by the Director of the National Park Service (a Presidential appointee), in conjunction with the Secretary of the Interior (a Presidential Cabinet post), the NPS spent untold taxpayer dollars to physically block access to over 600 miles of shoreline, 26 different...

  • Resolve to care for children in 2018

    Hayley Stoebner|Jan 24, 2018

11 has arrived! Are you searching for a New Year’s resolution, but just aren’t exactly sure what you should resolve to do? Do you love children and think they deserve to be cared for in a safe and nurturing home? If you answered yes to either of those questions, you should consider becoming a foster parent to one (or more) of the thousands of children who are currently in foster care in Washington state. What’s that, you say? You’d love to foster but fear you would get too attached to the children in your care and it would break your heart f...

  • LR Raiders wrestle at Kittitas, Pateros

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 24, 2018

Raider wrestlers mixed and matched in Pateros last week before heading to Kittitas for a tournament where Tony Nichols won first and Kaleb Horn won second for the Raiders in their weight divisions. To get his first-place spot in the 152-pound weight division Saturday in Kittitas, Nichols won by technical fall, 15-0, against Lopez from Oroville; pinned Burvee from Ellensburg at the one-minute, 59-second mark; and defeated Jones from Colfax 6-2. "It was a hard fought match," remarked Head Coach...

  • Raiders gain league victories, lose non-league game

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 24, 2018

The Raider boys made mincemeat out of the Mountain Lions, lost a non-league game against the Bulldogs, and won a close one against the Trojans last week. In Liberty Bell on Jan. 16, the Raiders earned a solid win over the Mountain Lions, with a final score of 71-41. "We came out and played hard," said Head Coach Jeremy Crollard. "They are starting to play more like a team. As the year has gone on, they're doing pretty good with everything. Our younger guys are getting more experience and...

  • Lake Roosevelt girls win one, lose two

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 24, 2018

After a big win preceded by two losses last week, the Lady Raiders are tied for league standing with Liberty Bell. Lake Roosevelt lost on the road to Liberty Bell, lost a non-league home game against Okanogan, and won by a landslide against Manson. In Liberty Bell on Jan. 16, the Lady Raiders lost 58-46 against the Mountain Lions. "You can't win when the other team shoots 42 free throws," Head Coach Wallace Pleasants said. "We never had our starting lineup on the floor except maybe two possessio...

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 17, 2018

Various organizations gathered at the Grand Coulee Dam Senior Center last Thursday to get input from the public and discuss problems with, and possible solutions for, local public transportation. In addition to members of the community and employees of various organizations were representatives from People For People, who organized the meeting, as well as Grant County Transit, organizations both involved with public transportation in the area. "The purpose of the meeting is to determine gaps in...

  • Lady Raiders play whole bench in big win

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 17, 2018

This past week the Lady Raiders basketball squad had a solid win in Oroville, and a home game canceled and rescheduled due to weather. In Oroville on Jan. 9, the Lady Raiders defeated the Lady Hornets 61-21, a similar score to earlier in the season when LR won 63-22 against Oroville. “It was a good all-around defensive game for us,” Head Coach Wallace Pleasants said. “We worked hard on moving our feet and staying in front. Solid game for all, with us getting a chance to play the entire bench.” Kayla St. Pierre led the Lady Raiders with 16 point...

  • Raider boys come up just short

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 17, 2018

The Raiders came up just shy of victory in Oroville last week, and a home game had to be rescheduled due to snow. On Jan. 9 in Oroville, the Raiders lost by just one point to the Hornets, 44-43. “It was a frustrating game, one we knew we should have won,” said Head Coach Jeremy Crollard. “We had so many opportunities that we missed. We just couldn’t stop their big guy, who had 20-25 rebounds. We drew up a play with 10 seconds left and ended up having a wide open layup with three seconds left and missed it. We have to move forward from here. H...

  • Raider wrestlers reign in Rainier

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 17, 2018

Lake Roosevelt wrestlers crossed the Cascade mountains all the way to Rainier last week, where they wrestled yetis on the side of the mountain. Well, not exactly. In actuality, they wrestled at Rainier High School, where Kaleb Horn and Tony Nichols placed first, Robert Thomas placed fifth, and the rest gained some solid experience. Wrestling at 132 pounds, Horn pinned his opponent, Gerrish from Rainier, then defeated Steele from Klahowya 5-1 before defeating Stafford from Klahowya 4-0 to secure the first-place spot. “That was a tough match, a g...

  • Chain migration or family reunification?

    Stacie Blake|Jan 17, 2018

It is historical fact that millions of people have come to the U.S. to create new lives in freedom. Immigration is the origin of our history as a country. Our federal government did not even keep immigration records until 1820. The bedrock of U.S growth and prosperity is immigration and for nearly 30 years the priority has been family reunification. The Immigration Act of 1990, the most comprehensive overhaul of our immigration system since 1965, was passed with bipartisan support and signed into law by President George H.W. Bush. Under...

  • China's Sword Policy cutting deep into recycling

    Don C. Brunell|Jan 17, 2018

Earlier this month, China launched its “national sword” policy which bans many recyclable materials it traditionally imported. Meanwhile, its upcoming March edict imposing a lower limit on contaminants is having global reverberations. Since the 1990s, the world has shipped the bulk of its used paper, plastics and metals to China. In 2016, its imported value was $18 billion. Nearly one-third of North America’s recyclables were processed in China — much of it from West Coast states. China was hungry for scrap and tolerated higher contami...

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 10, 2018

Care Net, a facility that helps young mothers, expecting mothers, and those who suspect they may be expecting, has operated in the area for over a year now and has had positive feedback from local young mothers. Rachel Harris, who manages the facility, estimates that she gets about 20 visits from women each month who come in for Care Net services, which range from free pregnancy tests, emotional support through the process, education on pregnancy and parenthood, and items rewarded for becoming...

  • Raider boys clinch win in overtime

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 10, 2018

"They almost gave me a heart attack on that one," Raider Head Coach Jeremy Crollard said about a 77-74 overtime victory the Raiders pulled off against the Mustangs last week before a losing in Waterville. Hosting the Bridgeport Mustangs Jan. 2, the Raiders were down seven points at the start of the second quarter, trailing 18-11, but put up 14 in the second quarter to the Mustangs' eight, cutting their lead down to one point. A high-scoring third quarter for both teams put the score tied at 51...

  • Wrestlers compete in three events

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 10, 2018

Raider wrestlers competed in the Brewster mixer and the Warden tournament this past week, as well as sending their female wrestler to Springdale for a girls’ wrestling event. Ida Sue went to Springdale Jan. 5, going 2-1 against her opponents. She pinned a West Valley wrestler, got pinned by a Quincy wrestler, but then pinned another Quincy opponent. “It was a good outing for her,” Lake Roosevelt Head Coach Steve Hood said. The wrestlers went to Warden for their Jan. 6 tournament, where LR placed fourth out of nine teams with 94.5 points. Tonask...

  • Schooled at tourney, improved Ladies win two

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 10, 2018

The Lady Raiders chalked up two more in the win column this past week, defeating both the Bridgeport Fillies as well as the Waterville Lady Shockers. The Lady Raiders beat the Fillies by 50 points in Coulee Dam Jan. 2, with a final score of 73-23. Head Coach Wallace Pleasants said their performance was in part due to improvements made over winter break competing against bigger schools in the Eagle Holiday Classic in Spokane. "The thing we learned in Spokane was as long as you move your feet,...

  • Finally telling the stories of those who died on the dam

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 3, 2018

Arthur A. French, 39, of New Jersey, was crushed by a concrete block he was stripping in 1937 while working on the Grand Coulee Dam to help support his mother and siblings through the Great Depression. Between the 1930s and the 1980s, at least 82 workers died at the Grand Coulee Dam site, and are now getting more recognition, thanks in part to the efforts of Jacob Miller, who works at the Visitor Center, and Susan Dechant, a researcher for the Northeast Washington Genealogical Society. Miller, w...

  • Winter Solstice has passed - now more daylight

    Bob Valen|Jan 3, 2018

With the passage of Winter Solstice, we will start gaining more daylight. It’s not that noticeable; it’s measured initially in about one minute each day, and that’s at sunset. When we arrive at mid-January, we begin to see good gain in daylight on both ends — sunrise and sunset. Example: Dec. 22, 2017 — sunrise at 7:43 a.m., sunset at 4:06 p.m.; Jan. 15, 2018 — sunrise at 7:41 a.m., sunset at 4:31 p.m. Think of all the things you can get done outside with all the extra light. (Insert smi...

    Jacob Wagner|Jan 3, 2018

This past week, Raider wrestlers held their annual Powerhouse Tournament at home before attending the Banks Lake Brawl in Coulee City. Raiders nabbed a lot of firsts at the events, in addition to their other placings. At the Powerhouse Tournament on Dec. 28, first-place spots went to Lake Roosevelt's Jon Shelley, wrestling at the 113-120-pound weight class; Kaleb Horn at 138; Tony Nichols at 152; and Ida Sue in the girls' division. Other placers that day were Tyler Palmer, who took third in the...
