  • SHARP Kids Summer programs announced

    Registration night for Summer Rocks and the SHARP Kids Middle School Summer Program is Thursday, May 23 from 4-6:30 p.m. at the Grand Coulee Dam School District Office. Space in each program is limited and enrollment will close when programs are full. No early registrations will be accepted. Dates for Summer Rocks and SHARP Kids Summer Program are: 9 a.m. to noon, July 1-Aug. 1, Monday-Thursday (no program July 4th).     It looks like the school district will have a large kindergarten class next fall. Center School Principal Lisa Lakin reported to the school board that 45 kindergarten students had already been signed and usually at this time only about 20 are signed up. The school board approved the district’s new technology plan and was told that the district has 400 computers tied to the internet.   • New students welcomed to Upward Bound at BBCC

    Thirty-eight students from five area high schools formally committed to the Upward Bound program during an induction ceremony at Big Bend Community College on April 23. Mostly high school freshmen, they started a journey to college in front of family and friends. They have joined a federal TRiO program that helps low-income and first-generation students enter and succeed in college.   • Labor contract approved

    The school board approved a three-year labor contract with its Public Service Employees at its meeting Monday night. The contract runs from the 2012-13 school year through 2014-15 school year. In the immediate year, the district has agreed to increase wages for its building secretaries by 40 cents per hour for additional work they have been asked to do. In the 2013-14 school year, PSE employees, (clerical, janitors, bus drivers and aides) will receive a 2.5 percent wage increase.     The Grand Coulee Dam School District board approved two trips for students and chaperones at Monday’s board meeting. Victor Camarena, project coordinator for Step Pipeline to the Future at Lake Roosevelt High School, is in charge of both trips. On March 21-23, Camarena will take four students to the National American Indian Science and Engineering Fair in Albuquerque, NM.     Big Bend Community College Foundation scholarship applications for 2013-14 are available now in the Financial Aid Office and in local high school counseling offices. The deadline is March 15 for receiving completed applications in the Financial Aid Office. Only completed applications submitted by that date will be considered.   • Local teachers help push state ranking

    The state of Washington ranks second in the nation in National Board Certified teachers a report for 2012 stated last week. Washington remains a national leader in both the number of new National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) and the total number teaching in the state’s schools. The Grand Coulee Dam School District currently has four NBCTs, two in Center Elementary and two in Lake Roosevelt High School.
