    Friends of Rachel Club members from Lake Roosevelt High School and Grand Coulee Dam Middle School Monday shared their message about the positive impact that Rachel’s Challenge is having in their schools, said Lee Seekins, director of the school district’s 21st Century CLC Grant programs.   • School board hears progress on new school

    The Grand Coulee Dam School District board got a lesson in color combinations as architect Cameron Golightly, from Design West, reviewed the color schemes of the new K-12 school Monday night. He explained that the K-6 wing would be a bit more colorful than the 7-12 wing which will have more “grown up” colors. Golightly reviewed color schemes for flooring, wall coverings and countertops during his presentation.     Hires, etc. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board accepted one resignation, approved a leave and stipend and made seven hires Monday night. Kyle Desautel’s resignation as head boys basketball coach was accepted and the board hired Jeff Brisbois to take his place. Michael Rounds, a Middle School Title VII paraprofessional, was given a requested leave.     Friends of Rachel Club members will share with the community a message against bullying at a family event Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. at The Village Cinema. Club members will discuss their projects and the impact Rachel’s Challenge is having on the community. The presentations will be followed by a movie shown for attendees of the family event.     Lake Roosevelt High School is sending its robotics team to two competitions in December. The six-student team is made up of Tim Loch, Jordan Charles, Corbin Wilder, Joshua Wilder, Devan Black and Brady Black and coached by Jeremiah Seekins. The school board gave its approval for the trips Monday night, learning that the cost associated with the travel was being borne by a grant from the 21st Century group.   • Equipment windfall

    Teachers Lee Largent, left, and Steve Hood stand with some of the woodworking equipment that was recently gifted to the district by Judy Mayne of Meridian, Idaho. The two went to Idaho and returned the equipment to Lake Roosevelt High School’s woodworking shop. Mayne’s connection to LRHS was through Athletic Director Richard Black, who served in the Navy with her late husband.     The school board got tangled up in agreeing to name November as “Native American Heritage Month,” at its meeting Monday. The item was on the agenda Monday night, and considered a procedural issue since the observation had waltzed through the board in previous years. This time it got sidetracked.     A Spokane Valley firm, Engineering Economics, Inc., has been hired by the school district to perform commissioning services for the K-12 school project, a requirement by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The district received two bids for the service. The Spokane Valley firm’s bid of $53,970 was about $13,000 under the second bid. The winning bidder will verify proper installation of equipment, perform on-site testing of equipment, and develop manuals and guides for its proper use.     Do you need to improve your basic skills or get your GED certificate so you can get that better job or go to college? Have you started but not finished taking your tests? This fall is the time to prepare for your GED exam, especially if you’ve already started taking the series of exams. You must finish by December 2013.     Alissa Mansker of Grand Coulee, attending Washington State University, is among 28 students in the state to receive a $2,000 scholarship from the Washington State Employees Credit Union, the group announced last week.     The SHARP Kids program announced that morning and after-school programs will start Tuesday Aug. 28.
