  • Changes in GED Test Coming

    This fall is the time to prepare for the GED exam, particularly if candidates for the GED certificate have already taken one or more of the tests in the current 2002 Series GED. This current version of the GED test will expire at the end of 2013 and will be replaced with the new version in January 2014. Any tests taken in the 2002 Series GED will not be valid at that time.     The Grand Coulee Dam Cooperative Preschool is about to start up again for fall. The cooperative, which has operated for decades in the area, is currently taking applicants for two age groups of children: those who will be 3 years old by Nov. 1 for the regular preschool, and those who will be 4 by Sept. 1 for the pre-kindergarten class.     Learning and fun combined The school board Monday night approved a field trip request from SHARP Kids and Summer Rocks to go to Moses Lake. The trip will include a stop at a pea farm, and at Soap Lake to conclude a unit on water testing. While at Moses Lake, the group will stop over at the Moses Lake Surf’n Slide park for two hours of swimming. The trip is planned for Aug. 1.     The Grand Coulee Dam School District board approved a number of hires at its Monday night meeting. Anne Cain, from Monitor, Wash., was hired as a third kindergarten teacher. Karmen Cecil, who taught fifth grade last year in the middle school, was hired as a developmental preschool teacher. Andrea Sperberg, from Spanaway, was hired as counselor at Lake Roosevelt High School.     The Grand Coulee High School Alumni Association has awarded their 2013 scholarships in the amount of $500 each to Andrew McClure and Hillary Carriere, Lake Roosevelt High School graduating seniors. Andrew wants to become an architect and will attend Walla Walla Community College in the fall, and later plans to pursue his degree at WSU. Hillary’s choice for continuing her education is Pacific Lutheran University where she will study to become a registered nurse and hopes eventually to become a nurse practitioner.     The school board approved the hire of a new English teacher at Lake Roosevelt High School at its special meeting last Wednesday night. Hired was Brian Daniels, of Fort Worth, Texas.   • Summer meals program to start for kids

    The Grand Coulee Dam School District last week announced the sponsorship of a Simplified Summer Food Program for Children. Meals will be made available at no charge to attending children 18 years of age and younger. Meals will be served at Center School, 317 Spokane Way, Grand Coulee, from July 1-Aug. 1, Monday-Thursday only. There will be no service on July 4. Meals to be served include breakfast, between 8:30-9:00 a.m; and lunch, served between 12-12:30 p.m. All meals must be eaten on site.... Full story

    The school board approved hiring four new teachers at its special meeting last Wednesday night. Matt Simpson of Brookings, Ore., was hired as a physical education/weight training teacher at Lake Roosevelt High School. Simpson was also hired as boys’ head basketball coach for LRHS.
