Grand Coulee Dam PTA will be holding a Valentine’s Day Social for the GCD Middle School on Friday, Feb. 14. From 2:45 to 4:45, an Xbox dance party and karaoke will be held for grades seventh and eighth. Admission will be $2. From 4:45 to 6:45 there will be a Valentine’s Day Dance with admission at $3.00. The Lake Roosevelt High School Associated Student Body has been selling “Pavers” as a fundraiser to support extra-curricular programs. This fundraiser will run until Friday, Feb. 14. The ASB will be running a special on the Pavers for only $75 each. Pavers will be outside for everyone to see all year long when construction of the new bulding is complete. For the third consecutive year, America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, will give eligible farmers across the country the opportunity to enhance math and science programs in their communities. Now until April 6, 2014, farmers can nominate a local public school district to compete for a merit-based grant of up to $25,000. Adult Basic Skills/GED classes to help adult learners increase college and career readiness skills as well as prepare to take the newly-launched computer-based 2014 GED exams are offered locally through Big Bend Community College. Beginning on Jan. 9, parents and guardians of students attending Grand Coulee Dam Middle School will have the opportunity to sign their students up for the third session of the SHARP Kids After School Program. The third session begins Jan 27 and continues until the beginning of Spring Break. Currently the program accepts 20 students during each session. Residence hall occupancy at Big Bend Community College is at near capacity and holding firm, according to college officials. There were 156 people living in the dorms during fall quarter, a 50-percent increase over last year. The college estimates 150 will return for winter quarter 2014. Enrollment in college-level math classes has set records this fall at Big Bend Community College. College officials say enrollment in those classes has doubled since 2009, and increased 25 percent from fall of 2012 to fall of 2013.
