    The search for a new superintendent for the Grand Coulee Dam School District officially got underway Tuesday. Applications open first for candidates from within the district and will remain open until Jan. 4, 2016. The board has scheduled an application screening period Jan. 5–8, for members to screen any internal candidates. An interview schedule has been set for Jan. 12–13.     A new "STEM culture" has emerged at Big Bend Community College as a result of a federal grant now in its fifth and final year, the college says. The college has recorded a 200-percent increase in student use of the STEM Center this year.     Nespelem School District will ask voters to support a four-year levy in February. The school board voted Monday night to pass a resolution for the $36,000 levy, which would replace the current operations and maintenance levy and gain the tiny district state “levy equalization” funds that would likely total more than a million dollars over the four years. Present superintendent, Dr. Dennis Carlson, has indicated to the board that he plans to retire when his contract is up, June 30, 2016. Carlson has been in the district for five years.     Nespelem School District’s board of directors Monday night heard an appeal by long-time teacher Rudy Christianson, retired, who has objected for a year to the rate he was paid for substitute teaching at the start of the 2014-15 school year, as the district found itself short of several teachers and a superintendent/principal.     How could anyone argue about the town of Coulee Dam being a "Tree City?" Councilmember Gayle Swagerty said this week that there are officially 680 trees in the town. The emphasis on trees was a part of the Arbor Day celebration Oct. 21, at Lake Roosevelt school and one of the requirements needed to be named a "Tree City" for 2015.     The Grand Coulee Dam School District is contracting with Coulee Medical Center to provide supervisory nursing services for the new school complex in Coulee Dam. The school board approved a measure that will provide two days of on-site registered nurse care at the schools, and also provide consultation when needed. The school also has two practical nurses who provide care, one at each school, five days a week.     The new Raider sculpture at the new educational complex in Coulee Dam will be officially dedicated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, the opening day of school.
