    Students at Lake Roosevelt Elementary School received awards in a special ceremony last Wednesday in the school's Accelerated Reading Program. Making the awards was Aaron Derr, elementary library reading specialist. The following students earned the top reader award and a $25 Amazon gift card for their grade level.     Ida and Bruce Gamboa of Electric City are proud to announce the graduation of their daughter Jewel Noelle Gamboa from the University of Washington, class of 2015.     Several local students were included in Washington State University’s President’s Honor roll for spring 2015. As WSU lists them, they are, from Coulee Dam, Taima Nichole Anne Carden and Alissa Brianne Mansker. From Coulee City, Allison J. Fox, Julianna Mae Hughes and Madeline Corinne Isaak. The listing means they achieved a overall grade point of 3.75 while enrolled in at least nine graded hours in a single semester, or had a GPA of 3.5 based on at least 15 cumulative hours of graded work.... Full story

  • Area's First HS21 Graduates

    Four area students fulfilled the requirements to earn a high school (HS21) certificate through Big Bend Community College during the 2014-15 academic year. The HS21 program offers students ages 21 and older the opportunity to complete their high school requirements by producing a portfolio of evidence based on prior learning, community service, occupational experience, high school transcripts, 2002 Series GED test scores, current appraisals, special projects, and coursework.     Grand Coulee Dam School District Superintendent Dennis Carlson Monday night outlined changes in the use of some spaces at the gym site on the Lake Roosevelt High School campus. Carlson told the board that the plan is to remove a wall in the old art room and then use the space s a weight room. That would turn the existing weight room into a space for Lee Largent and his special math classes. Work would include some interior door work for security reasons.     Lake Roosevelt Junior/Senior High School principal Brandon Byers has resigned. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board of directors accepted Byers’ resignation at a special meeting Monday night. Byers said Tuesday that he has accepted a position as assistant principal at Frontier Middle School in Moses Lake. Byers graduated from Moses Lake High School in 2002 and has several family members there.   • Club awards Sumner scholarship

    The Banks Lake Bass Club Monday awarded Jazmine Sumner, graduating senior from Lake Roosevelt High School, a $500 Scholarship. Sumner resides in Grand Coulee and plans on attending Spokane Community College to study medical sonography. She will graduate Saturday with a grade point average of 3.668 and was one of five graduating seniors that applied for the $500 Banks Lake Bass Club Scholarship.... Full story

  • Bus maintenance contracted

    The school district has renewed its contract to maintain Keller School buses and entered into an agreement to maintain Colville Tribal Head Start buses. The agreement with Keller calls for bus garage personnel to maintain Keller’s buses for $850 a month. The Keller School District will pay for parts, tires and oil. The contract covers mechanic time and shop time. The contract is a continuing contract without changes.     Sixth-graders helped the Rotary Club Saturday in a successful fund raiser designed to benefit them. The club's spaghetti dinner at Coulee Dam Town Hall brought in over $3,000 and will likely net over $2,000 after expenses.     COULEE DAM—The Grand Coulee Dam School District approved five resignations and one hire at its meeting last Wednesday night. Resigning were Lisa Vaughn, music teacher; Randi Heizer, paraprofessional for speech in the elementary school; LaLaina Caddy, paraprofessional in the elementary school; Barbara Mooney and Julie Hart, both bus drivers. The lone hire was Loren Endsley, secondary PE/Strength teacher.     Two school calendars set for next year The Grand Coulee Dam School District board passed its calendar for the 2015-16 school year at its meeting Monday night. The calendar calls for a starting date of Sept. 1, and a closing date of June 9. The Christmas break will be Dec. 19 - Jan. 3. The Nespelem School District, also meeting Monday night, passed their calendar for next year, as well. Nespelem will start Sept. 2 and end the year on June 15, 2016.
