  • Nespelem sets budget for school

    Still worried about a possible lack of money coming in after the Legislature’s late decisions in double overtime last month, Nespelem School District Superintendent Mary Hall told school board members Monday it’s going to be a fiscally tight year. The board passed budgets totalling nearly $5.4 million, including the general operating budget for $4.57 million, and a capital (major building expenses) budget of $695,200.   • Supplemental contracts approved for LR schools

    The Grand Coulee Dam School District board Monday night approved a number of supplemental contracts for various functions at the school. Aaron Derr was issued supplemental contracts as a district website administrator and a 12th-grade advisor. Carrie Derr was approved as K-6 ASB advisor and for technical support.     Nespelem School District has brought back Dr. Mary Hall, who was sworn in as the new superintendent at a board meeting Monday. The board also approved hiring Jeff Golding as a middle school science teacher. The Gonzaga University graduate is not a certificated teacher yet and will work on getting that certificate this year.     Nespelem Elementary School students participated in the Governor's Summit on Career Connected Learning May 31 at the Microsoft Conference Center in Redmond, Washington, on the Microsoft Campus. The event was also simultaneously broadcast across Washington state for viewing at 26 remote sites. To prepare for a presentation at the summit, up to 13 Nespelem students met daily after school, working with EV 3 Lego Robots, learning coding, adding sensors and lessons with the Mars Space Challenge.     For the first time Grand Coulee High School Alumni Association is awarding scholarships to graduating seniors from schools other than Lake Roosevelt High School. Scholarships in the amount of $500 each were awarded to five graduating seniors: Brooklyn Reichlin, Electric City, LRHS senior who plans to attend SFCC; Erica Diane Leffel, Ritzville; Nicole Coppersmith, Davenport; and Jacob Marshall, Wilbur.     The Grand Coulee Dam Music Boosters club is active again after over a year of dormancy. The club supports music education for local students by helping raise money to cover instrument rentals and more for K-12 students.     Brooklyn Rose Reichlin of Electric City is the 2017 recipient of a $1,000 scholarship awarded by the Grand Coulee Dam Lions Club. The scholarship application process includes a review of applicants’ academic achievement, community service record, leadership, extracurricular activities, and educational goals. Reichlin, who will graduate from Lake Roosevelt Junior/Senior High School on Saturday, plans to attend Spokane Falls Community College and major in business and cosmetology.... Full story

    The school board approved a number of personnel changes at its meeting Monday night. Susan Duclos resigned her paraprofessional position and then was hired to a Career Technical Education position. Levi Seekins has resigned his position as athletic director; and his brother, Jeremiah Seekins, was reduced two hours a day. Ken Miles resigned his position as school bus driver, and Patty Neddo resigned as a paraprofessional. The school board approved all changes.... Full story

    • Grand Coulee Dam School District board member Richard Black will pass out diplomas to over 40 seniors at ceremonies scheduled for June 10. He was selected from among members of the board at its May 22 meeting. • The school board has delayed its next meeting to June 5 to allow any senior not on the graduation list to make an appeal before the school board. • The school district will accept up to 16 students for summer driver education classes.     The Lake Roosevelt Schools music department just won a $6,250 grant. Karen Pace, music director ,said the grant was given through the umbrella of the Washington Music Education Association. Pace directs four bands in the district and the district’s choir, for a total of about 165 students, Pace said Friday, plus elementary music. Shee put in for the grant in March and received word that the grant was coming through for the district earlier in May.     This year’s senior class is planning a trip to Seattle and places beyond for its “senior trip.” But the 25 seniors and four adult chaperones will have to be “early birds” if they expect to catch the bus before it pulls out at 5 a.m. for the two-day annual event scheduled for June 2-3. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board approved the trip at its Monday meeting. Seniors will leave early the first day and come back late — very late on the second day.   • Tall Timbers trip set

    Some 60 sixth-graders, 50 from Lake Roosevelt and 10 from Nespelem, will get the “Tall Timbers” experience May 17-19 when they head for the outdoor education location near Leavenworth. Each year, for the past several, Lake Roosevelt and Nespelem sixth-graders have traveled to Tall Timbers, an outdoor recreation/education resort nestled in the mountains about 10 miles out of Leavenworth.     Renowned Native American artist and politician Enoch Kelly Haney visited students in grades six through 12 from Nespelem Elementary School and Lake Roosevelt High School in the LR gym on Thursday. Bert Smith, a Coulee Dam High School alumnus, had introduced Haney to Kim Stanger, the Indian Education director at Lake Roosevelt, who helped organize the event.
