Nespelem School District will conduct an annual review tonight of its Indian Policies and Procedures as they relate to Impact Aid and Indian Education, the school said. Lake Roosevelt Schools received a $6,000 check from a grant from the Music Matters Distribution Fund at their holiday band and choir concert on Dec. 13. "I was very happy and excited, and started a shopping list immediately," said music teacher Karen Pace. School buses passed a surprise state inspection recently, school mechanic Levi Seylor advised the school board Monday night. Normally, Seylor told the board, inspections are made in the summer months. This time the district buses got a surprise inspection and passed it with only some minor problems, Seylor stated in his report to the board. The surprise inspection was of 25 percent of the district’s bus fleet. If a bus fails to pass inspection it is immediately taken out of commission. Grand Coulee Dam School District directors Monday approved the hiring of four people to fill open positions. Hired were Susan Duclos and Stacy Davis in advisory positions with the Future Business Leaders Association. Both Duclos and Davis are business department teachers in the high school. Mataiya Nachtigal, of Electric City, and Shan Birdtail and Tiffany Circle, both of Nespelem, were listed this week among the 2016-17 graduates of Wenatchee Valley College with associate of arts and sciences degrees, the school announced. Several complaints have recently been levied against the Lake Roosevelt school lunch program. Complaints include that the program is frequently running out of hot lunches, evidence of outdated milk and students finding hair in their food. The person complaining stated that kitchen workers are not wearing hair nets. The issue was brought to the attention of Superintendent Paul Turner, who has been monitoring the lunch program. Students and parents check out the Scholastic Book Fair held in the Lake Roosevelt Elementary Library on Tuesday. Students of all ages in the Lake Roosevelt and Nespelem School Districts will attend a Cultural Awareness Gathering next week. The event highlights many aspects of Native American culture. School board briefs The Grand Coulee Dam School District board of directors OK’d a number of last-minute hires at its meeting Monday night. Two stood out. Levi Seylor was hired just this week to become the district’s lead mechanic, replacing longtime mechanic George Davis, who retires Aug. 31, after a long service record with the district. What should be done with old trophies? That question regarding old Mason City High School trophies was brought to the Grand Coulee Dam School District board by Electric City resident Birdie Hensley Monday night. She explained in a letter that many of the older trophies are stored in the basement of Coulee Dam Town Hall and in other places around the community. Issues raised by retired custodian Ray Wells before the Grand Coulee Dam School District board were largely part of his job description and were misdirected, former school superintendent Dennis Carlson stated. Wells had appeared before the school board in June to complain that issues he raised while he was still employed by the district were largely ignored. Geology will be taught at Lake Roosevelt High School beginning this fall. “It’s a natural fit,” Superintendent Paul Turner stated, “given the area we live in and the rich geology surroundings of the Grand Coulee area.” The new science course will be taught by Mark Vinciguerra, who will begin his second year at Lake Roosevelt Junior/Senior High School. Still worried about a possible lack of money coming in after the Legislature’s late decisions in double overtime last month, Nespelem School District Superintendent Mary Hall told school board members Monday it’s going to be a fiscally tight year. The board passed budgets totalling nearly $5.4 million, including the general operating budget for $4.57 million, and a capital (major building expenses) budget of $695,200.
