  • Trimming the fat

    Jesse Utz|Mar 16, 2016

Ask any butcher: trimming the fat off a beef or a deer is essential to the prime cuts of meat. Some butchers just throw away the excess fat; others use it in other places, like in burger. Others even give the fat away or sell it to candle makers or other crafts that require the waxy substance. That being said, native tribes from around the globe use every part of the animal. Especially the nomads way up north who rely on the fatty substance to survive. But even we meat lovers say, “A little fat is where the flavor is” as we gnaw on a whi... Full story

  • Don't take police for granted

    Scott Hunter|Mar 9, 2016

Most of us would never put ourselves in harm’s way, knowing that a man with a gun might be approaching with evil intent. A few of us just did. Local police were asked last week to block the highway heading into Electric City from the south because a man had threatened to shoot up the school in Coulee City. He didn’t show up here; police caught him outside Soap Lake. But he could have, and police here had to be ready to defend the rest of us from an armed lunatic. Citizens shouldn’t take that for granted. Scott Hunter editor and publi... Full story

  • Coulee Dam Parks and Natural Resources Survey will gather input

    Gayle Swagerty|Mar 9, 2016

The Parks & Natural Resources Board of Coulee Dam has developed a survey regarding the parks and natural resources. The Board desires community input as to usage and enjoyment, and on needed improvements of the parks, trails, and natural resources in this area. Community input will inform the board what the community desires in our continuing effort to maintain, develop, and improve the parks and natural resources. This is your opportunity to have your voice heard in this important issue. Whether you are a resident of Coulee Dam, reside in a... Full story

  • When the heart hurts from a distance

    Jesse Utz|Mar 9, 2016

It is a big world. Most people, when asked about things they want to accomplish in life, answer at least part of the question with, “See the world” or “Travel.” A lot of us get to do that. Others are stuck in the land where they grew up. It is amazing to hear a kid say “I have never been to Seattle” or “I have never been out of Washington state.” But those types are here. Most, through no fault of their own, just never got the opportunity. But it is a big world. I have been a few places. Not, by... Full story

  • One country, two standards

    Jack Stevenson|Mar 9, 2016

Recently, national news pundits have been making a case that some of us are angry, disenchanted with the political “establishment” that governs America, and that we are willing to vote for an “outsider.” Why would anyone be disenchanted? Let me cite some reasons. Two classes of citizens are evolving in the United States, one subject to law and one not. A low- ranking soldier released a batch of classified documents without authorization to do so. He is serving 35 years in a federal prison. A four-star general gave classified documents to his... Full story

The power house foundations were completed to elevation 948.8 and the training wall to elevation 980. – March 8, 1938 photo... Full story

  • Regarding Coulee Dam's natural resources, parks, trees, etc.

    Carol Netzel|Mar 2, 2016

I wish to commend Mayor Wilder, the Coulee Dam Town Council, and the Natural Resources and Parks Board for the time and effort they have spent on bringing our Comprehensive Plan for the town up to date. In researching the history involved, I discovered that the first ordinance was passed in 1959. It is very short, establishing a Parks Board. Since then, the town has gone through many changes and revisions. Changes took place in 1990, 2006 and 2008. Now we are faced with possibly more changes. In 1998 a very comprehensive plan was completed... Full story

  • Take medical coverage beyond the gap

    Johnathan Hladik|Mar 2, 2016

The Affordable Care Act was signed into law six years ago this month. The uninsured rate is now 11.9 percent, the lowest ever recorded. Approximately 17 million more Americans have health insurance today than before the law was passed. Hospitals across the nation have saved tens of billions of dollars on uncompensated care. Despite this progress, over five million Americans remain unable to access health insurance because they fall into the “coverage gap.” These individuals make too much income to qualify for Medicaid, but too little to be eli... Full story

  • Put down the controller and walk away, spring is here

    Jesse Utz|Mar 2, 2016

The gray days filled with gloom and chill are disappearing fast. The robins are moving in and the buttercups are blooming. Sneezing is more prevalent, and that means spring is here. Yes, you may open the curtains now and even open up the door. Don’t worry, that bright light in the sky is the sun. You may not recognize it, but it is. Feel the warmth, the glow, meaning soon we will be complaining about the heat — but not just yet. Kids, if you noticed your dad and mom pulling these long things out of the garage with finger-like things on the end... Full story

  • Be watchful for you and your neighbors

    Scott Hunter|Feb 24, 2016

Not too long ago, a couple moving into the area told us they felt safe moving here after reading Coulee Cops in The Star for several weeks. They concluded that if that’s as bad as it gets, this must be a very safe community. And they’re still right to an extent. Coulee Dam was recently noted as “one of the safest cities in the U.S.” by Consumer Affairs, ranking number two in the state, right behind Odessa because some algorithm noticed a 100-percent drop in the burglary rate. That’s nice, but feels pretty far off the mark this week. With mult... Full story

  • Re: Delay in court marshal of B. Bergdahl (deserter and traitor) in American Legion Magazine Feb. 2016

    Bill Miller|Feb 24, 2016

I have read where this man left his post of duty (in combat) not once, but twice. To leave a duty post, you had to report to the duty officer who could only permit you to leave your post if qualified duty relief was available and for permitted time. Bergdahl followed no such procedure. Bergdahl should be court-martialed, given a dishonorable discharge with no benefits and sentenced to 30 years hard labor with no time shortened. He should be declared a “deserter/traitor” and jailed immediately. Not doing so dishonors all who have honorably ser... Full story

  • Chicken overload and other things from the weekend

    Jesse Utz|Feb 24, 2016

There comes a time in every man’s life when enough is enough. I reached my tipping point with chicken this weekend. Let me explain before you start telling me about “how good chicken is” for me. My lovely wife, (I know, many a husband’s sad stories begins this way) has a heart for kids. She enjoys cooking for people too. Plus, the position she holds in the school right now, on every early-out Monday they provide a meal in a café-type setting. You may have read about that on these very pages not long ago. So this Monday, chicken soup was on t... Full story

  • It's not just Flint where kids are in danger

    Ronald White and Molly Rauch|Feb 24, 2016

Brown, foul-smelling water spewing out of faucets. Children poisoned by lead and other toxic metals. Families with aching joints, brittle bones, and shocking hair loss. These troubling images and more have been flowing out of Flint, Michigan, since late last year as the scope and impact of the city’s austerity-driven water contamination crisis has become increasingly clear. But pollution, contamination, and toxic chemicals that harm children’s health aren’t confined to Flint. America’s children are being exposed to a host of toxic chemica... Full story

    Diane Canady|Feb 17, 2016

I would like to nominate Archie Dennis as the “Volunteer of the Year” as he is very dedicated to helping people in our community and in the surrounding counties. Archie has been an emergency medical technician and fireman for many years, and he belongs to three departments in our area. Archie is an EMT with the Grand Coulee Fire Department and Ambulance Service, a fireman in the Coulee Dam Fire Department, and a member of the Elmer City Fire Department. Archie is also a member of the Okanogan Search and Rescue as a diver and Search Team mem... Full story

  • Glo Carroll nominated for Volunteer of the Year

    Diane Babler|Feb 17, 2016

I wish to nominate Glo Carroll of Coulee Dam as the Grand Coulee Dam area Volunteer of the Year. I don’t personally know Glo, but as a member of this community, I was witness to the amazing work she did this summer in the midst of the worst wildfire season ever in the state of Washington. Glo recognized there was a tremendous need for assistance in many areas to the firefighters who were working in our area to save lives and property during this unprecedented fire season. Glo and an army of friends and strangers she recruited went to work o... Full story

  • Stop break-ins from brazen thieves

    Wayne Fowler|Feb 17, 2016

The community needs to start working together to stop the thievery that is going on in this area. Our local police departments can’t do it on their own and, due to cut backs in budgets, they are short staffed and need our help. We have thieves who are walking around town and knocking on doors. If someone answers, they ask if they need some work done, like tree trimming, yard work, painting, etc. If this happens, you should ask to see their city business license or contractor’s license. You could call city hall or the police department. Also, th... Full story

  • Re: Coulee Dam wastewater treatment facility

    Greg Wilder|Feb 17, 2016

The town has all worked for the past 10 years, grappling with ideas, thoughts, concepts, and a lot of hard work regarding the wastewater treatment facility design and implementation. The process involved an amalgamation of two mayors, a few engineers, a thought from here and a concept from there, AND we’ve come together. After looking at a number of different concepts, we adopted the Preliminary Engineering Report, which is a requirement to move forward. We’ve virtually completed the environmental processes and approved the engineering contract... Full story

  • Meet an LR Hall of Fame and Gem in the Coulee inductee: Victor Camarena

    Jesse Utz|Feb 17, 2016

Recently Victor “The Mongoose” Camarena was named Regional Junior High Wrestling Coach of the Year. Big accomplishments for any man, but even greater for Victor. Victor is a former Raider himself and a former state-caliber wrestler. To be honest, he is probably still at that caliber of wrestling and has been coaching future wrestling studs and studettes since his return to the area. But it does not stop there. He is in the hallways and the classrooms, too, helping with science, tutoring with math, encouraging students to get their grades up and... Full story

  • Traumatic news demands much of us

    Scott Hunter|Feb 10, 2016

The arrest last week of a popular educator is an emotionally wrenching trauma for a significant portion of the community, not just for him and his family. If he’s guilty of what the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force say he is, they’ve either stopped a budding deviant or just a mid-life crisis that strayed far afield from the norm, ruined his future and hampered the futures of many others. Whatever the case, the community in general will need to rebound from severe disappointment. The good news is, it will. Part of that rebound wil... Full story
