  • GCHS Alumni association to hold first meeting

    Grand Coulee High School Alumni Association will hold the first of three regularly scheduled meetings for 2014 on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m., at United Methodist Church, 405 Center Street, Grand Coulee. The purpose of the organization is to recognize outstanding graduates of Lake Roosevelt High School by the awarding of two $500 scholarships each year. Money for the scholarships is raised by annual dues of $10 from anyone who at one time attended Grand Coulee schools, as well as graduates of GCHS.     Who goes swimming in January? Colville Reservation youth do if they participated in 4-H YFP (Youth and Families with Promise)! Every Saturday in January through Feb. 1, has been filled with bus rides to the YMCA in Spokane, so that Keller youth could participate in swimming lessons and free swim time in an indoor pool. Twenty youth and their chaperones have braved the cold, early mornings to board a bus and ride for two hours, to take swim lessons. The swim instructors are trained lifeguards... Full story

    Joining the Arbor Day Foundation is an ideal way to get in the mood for spring planting. Anyone from Washington who joins the Foundation in February 2014 will receive 10 free Colorado blue spruce trees to plant when the weather turns warm.     Grand Coulee Police 1/27- Police went to Coulee Medical Center on a request from mental health officials who had an active pickup order on a person at the hospital. A medical doctor told police that they were not needed, so they left the facility until later when they learned that the man was wanted out of Mattawa for first-degree robbery.     Income tax time is here! Free tax preparation is being offered at the Grand Coulee Senior Center again this year. Volunteers trained in cooperation with IRS and AARP will be available every Tuesday, Feb 11 - April 8, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This service is available to anyone with low or middle income. You do not have to be seniors or members of the senior center to take advantage of this free help. However, special attention is given to those 60 or older. Free e-filing is also available.     Grand Coulee Police 1/17 - A man living in a Continental Heights apartment reported that after a visitor from Wilbur left, he found that $30 cash was missing, plus some prescriptions. 1/20 - A Safeway pharmacy employee said that a call was received asking for a prescription to be filled and that another party would be by to pick it up. But a woman supposedly ordering the prescription said she had not called for the prescription.     Damon Eric Harrell, son of Melvin Harrell Sr. of Grand Coulee, says he made local history by becoming the first person from the Grand Coulee Dam area to have set foot in both the Sky Tower in Auckland, New Zealand and the Space Needle in Seattle. Harrell, 48, was in New Zealand with his wife, Kymberly Harrell to visit Auckland after vacationing in Tahiti.     Grand Coulee Police 1/12 - A Burdin Boulevard woman reported that a neighbor had the trunk of his vehicle open and was putting plastic bags in it. She was told the police would add extra patrols to the area. 1/13 - A Grand Coulee man who had been banned from Safeway two weeks ago for threatening store employees came into the store, and staff called the police. He was gone by the time police arrived but an officer went to his home to talk with him.     Grand Coulee Police 1/3 - A man reported that his $225 boots were missing from his locker at the 500 Kv Switchyard. He last remembered seeing the boots about a month ago. - A Grand Coulee man called to report that his live-in girlfriend had taken his car and he wanted it back. Later the woman contacted police to ask if she was going to be arrested. She was told then that it might be a good idea to take the car back.     Grand Coulee Police 12/27 - A man reported a suspicious car parked in the “train wreck” area on Kruk Road and that there was no one around it. He said when he went by the area again, the car was gone. The car was traced to a resident on Sunset Drive. - An officer went to a residence on Electric Boulevard on a domestic call and a man told him that his wife came home drunk and he wanted her out of the house.     The joy of working with computer recording software unsurprisingly leads to a bit of frustration. Here at the home weather station we have a gap of eight days lost – the last eight days of November. For November reporting purposes, I’ll be using data from another local recorded weather station. Temperature ranges were as follows: the low for the month was 14°F (Nov. 21) and the high was 56 (Nov. 1).     Grand Coulee Police 12/19 - Plant Protection advised police of a number of thefts from an office building in the industrial yard. One person reported a pair of “Brunton” binoculars valued at $500 taken from his office along with a pair of scissors, some blue pens and a stopwatch. A person across the hall reported that a digital camera was taken from his desk valued at $954.     Grand Coulee Police 12/13 - A man living on Kelso Avenue in Electric City reported that someone dumped material into his hot tub. The police report stated that the material was the consistency of aquarium/reptile sand. It further stated that it appeared to be a malicious act. 12/16 - A Mazda truck parked illegally on Midway Avenue, with tabs that had expired over a year and a half ago, was removed by a tow vehicle.     December 5th the Etheta Anderson Library hosted a “Lighting of the Library” party for the second time and over 125 people attended.
