Grand Coulee Dam School District’s board of directors hired Menehune Consultants, LLC, of Electric City, Monday night, to help with the transition of changing superintendents in the district. Principal party in the firm is Dr. Dennis Carlson, the present superintendent. COULEE DAM — Average attendance in Grand Coulee Dam School District for the month of May was 679.24, the school board learned last Monday night. The district budgeted for 680 students and this is the first month since September last year that the attendance has been below budget. The high month was in December, when the average was 689.97. Grand Coulee 5/7 - An Electric City man was banned from an Electric City tavern when he refused to leave after being asked. He had brought a couple of guitars and an amplifier into the bar and then used some of the equipment that belonged to the band playing. He gave Conrad Hilton as a reference. The Lady Raiders’ season came to an end May 3 in Tonasket as the Tigers took both games of a doubleheader by the scores of 11-10 and 13-7. Because of losses earlier in the season, the Lady Raiders finished fifth in the Central Washington North, one place short of qualifying for districts. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board approved two student trips at its meeting April 25, and put a hold on another. The board approved a trip by three students and advisors to “Imagine Tomorrow,” a science event at Washington State University at Pullman. The students will present a biofuel education project. The event is scheduled for May 20-22. Eleven students and two advisors were approved to take part in a project at Silverwood Theme Park, in Athol, Idaho. Grand Coulee Police 4/24 - Safeway reported to police that a woman came into the store and placed three bottles of liquor — Jameson Whiskey, Smirnoff Twist, and Captain Morgan Run — into her white purse, along with some beef jerky, and walked out without paying for it. One of the clerks followed her out and got her license plate number. A Coulee Dam man arrested in February on charges related to his alleged relationship with a 14-year-old girl in Wisconsin found himself in federal court Monday in Spokane, not a state court in Okanogan. Nate Piturachsatit, 37, pleaded not guilty to one count of producing child pornography. The girl’s mother contacted Wisconsin police when she found a package containing a T-shirt mailed to her from Piturachsatit from a Spokane address. Mark Herndon was selected by the school board Monday night to become vice principal at Lake Roosevelt Junior and Senior High School. Herndon is currently principal of Clallam Bay, a K-12 school in the Cape Flattery School District at Sekiu, Washington, and will take over his new duties here next fall. I would like to respond to the Grand Coulee alumni group fund raising article that appeared in The Star newspaper March 30, 2016, and thank them for getting this fund raising started. I want to correct the information of only three high schools being involved; there were actually four high schools. Beyond the call A Grand Coulee police officer, Thomas L. Johnson, performed an act well beyond the normal activity of an officer on March 31. He responded to a call of a stranded vehicle on SR-155 near milepost 7, where he found a vehicle with the left front tire entirely flat. Since the motorist wasn’t strong enough to loosen the lug nuts, Johnson did, and then put the spare on for the driver. Dates for a getaway that brings together students from Nespelem and Lake Roosevelt schools are set for May and a fundraiser is planned for April. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board set dates for the Tall Timber Ranch trip for sixth-graders from Nespelem Elementary and from Lake Roosevelt Elementary at its meeting Monday night. An alumni group that wants past mascots memorialized at the new school in Coulee Dam is working toward a new sculpture and collecting money to have it made. The Grand Coulee Alumni Association has opened an account at North Cascades Bank in Grand Coulee to collect funds for such a statue commemorating the three school districts of the past that comprise the current system. The Grand Coulee Dam School District school board approved the purchase of a 2001 Suburban at its meeting Monday night. The vehicle has 71,000 miles on it and the purchase price is $9,386. Prior to the decision to purchase the nine-passenger vehicle, the district rented it from Practical Rent a Car, in Grand Coulee, when school officials were scheduled to go to education meetings around the state. We are missing some fitness equipment from the middle school gym fitness area. The following equipment was noticed missing after the weekend of March 19-20: two 20-pound dumbbells; two 25-pound dumbbells; two 30-pound dumbbells; two 35-pound dumbbells; two 50-pound dumbbells, and an inclined workout board. As we all know, this equipment was purchased to support our middle school kids, but has been made available to the public at no cost, except for a key deposit of $25 that is returned when the keys are returned. Ambulance runs reported Grand Coulee’s ambulance crew responded to 19 calls during February, city council members learned last Tuesday night. Six calls were to Coulee Dam (32 percent), three were transports out of the area and 10 calls were in the Grand Coulee area. There were no fire calls, but there was one mutual aid call, and firefighters responded to Coulee Medical Center, where a bad sensor set off an alarm.
