I would like to respond to the Grand Coulee alumni group fund raising article that appeared in The Star newspaper March 30, 2016, and thank them for getting this fund raising started. I want to correct the information of only three high schools being involved; there were actually four high schools. Beyond the call A Grand Coulee police officer, Thomas L. Johnson, performed an act well beyond the normal activity of an officer on March 31. He responded to a call of a stranded vehicle on SR-155 near milepost 7, where he found a vehicle with the left front tire entirely flat. Since the motorist wasn’t strong enough to loosen the lug nuts, Johnson did, and then put the spare on for the driver. Dates for a getaway that brings together students from Nespelem and Lake Roosevelt schools are set for May and a fundraiser is planned for April. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board set dates for the Tall Timber Ranch trip for sixth-graders from Nespelem Elementary and from Lake Roosevelt Elementary at its meeting Monday night. An alumni group that wants past mascots memorialized at the new school in Coulee Dam is working toward a new sculpture and collecting money to have it made. The Grand Coulee Alumni Association has opened an account at North Cascades Bank in Grand Coulee to collect funds for such a statue commemorating the three school districts of the past that comprise the current system. The Grand Coulee Dam School District school board approved the purchase of a 2001 Suburban at its meeting Monday night. The vehicle has 71,000 miles on it and the purchase price is $9,386. Prior to the decision to purchase the nine-passenger vehicle, the district rented it from Practical Rent a Car, in Grand Coulee, when school officials were scheduled to go to education meetings around the state. We are missing some fitness equipment from the middle school gym fitness area. The following equipment was noticed missing after the weekend of March 19-20: two 20-pound dumbbells; two 25-pound dumbbells; two 30-pound dumbbells; two 35-pound dumbbells; two 50-pound dumbbells, and an inclined workout board. As we all know, this equipment was purchased to support our middle school kids, but has been made available to the public at no cost, except for a key deposit of $25 that is returned when the keys are returned. Ambulance runs reported Grand Coulee’s ambulance crew responded to 19 calls during February, city council members learned last Tuesday night. Six calls were to Coulee Dam (32 percent), three were transports out of the area and 10 calls were in the Grand Coulee area. There were no fire calls, but there was one mutual aid call, and firefighters responded to Coulee Medical Center, where a bad sensor set off an alarm. The school board and Paul Turner agreed on a three-year contract Monday night and the Grand Coulee Dam School District has a new superintendent of schools. Interest in acquiring Center School for a fiber mill is on hold. Vicki Eberhart, president of the North American Wool Cooperative in Oroville, said Tuesday that her group is active in another project in Oroville and will make a decision on Center School after the current project is complete and a feasibility study is made. Paul Turner, the assistant principal at Lake Roosevelt Junior and Senior High School, has been offered the position as superintendent of schools for the Grand Coulee Dam School District.
