Ten Years Ago A master plan is now in the works for Coulee Dam’s Mason City Park and all of the town’s residents can help decide what the plan will contain. A proposed master plan with a rough outline of future changes to the east Coulee Dam park was approved by the town council last Wednesday. Grand Coulee Dam School District Superintendent Dennis Carlson was pleased with the new state budget signed by the governor Sunday. The new state two-year budget fully funds all day kindergarten, a switch from the past when the state funded kindergartens by only 50 percent. The fully state-funded kindergarten will save the district an estimated $150,000 a year. Prior to this the board of directors had committed the district to funding the half not funded by the state because the members felt that early learning needed a boost in the district.... Full story
Using the Colville Tribal TERO office as a hiring headquarters is working well, according to officials on the Grand Coulee Dam School District’s new K-12 school project. A report by Walker Construction to the school board showed that through June 14, 73 percent of hours worked so far on the school project were worked by Native American workers. Ten Years Ago Armed with only garden hoses, several Coulee Dam residents helped prevent a fire from destroying two Coulee Dam homes last Friday. Coulee Dam Mayor Quincy Snow said strong winds knocked a poplar tree over on Yucca Street. That caused a short in the line at the pole behind Dennis King’s home at 702 Tulip Street and started the fire. Village Cinema - Movie of the week: Bruce Almighty. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board approved a number of hires at its Monday night meeting. Anne Cain, from Monitor, Wash., was hired as a third kindergarten teacher. Karmen Cecil, who taught fifth grade last year in the middle school, was hired as a developmental preschool teacher. Andrea Sperberg, from Spanaway, was hired as counselor at Lake Roosevelt High School. Proctor retiring Longtime teacher and coach Gordon Proctor will be honored tonight, beginning at 5:30, for his 35 years with the Grand Coulee Dam School District. Those tomato seeds that went into space back in the 1990s are still working their wonders here in the coulee. Nancy Carlson, teacher, now retired, obtained seeds from NASA and used them as a science project for fourth and fifth graders. The Grand Coulee Dam School District last week announced the sponsorship of a Simplified Summer Food Program for Children. Meals will be made available at no charge to attending children 18 years of age and younger. Meals will be served at Center School, 317 Spokane Way, Grand Coulee, from July 1-Aug. 1, Monday-Thursday only. There will be no service on July 4. Commissioner: Golf course not closing “It is not our intention to close the golf course in July,” O. J. Scharbach said Friday at The Star. “I’ve heard this three or four times. Unhealthy matters Grant County Health District reported a possible case of measles in the Grand Coulee Dam School District. The health district said it is working with school officials to investigate. The disease spreads easily from coughing and sneezing. The general contractor building the new school complex is hauling some 22,000 cubic yards of sand from the Bureau of Reclamation’s giant sandpile for fill on the K-12 school project to bring the building site to grade, officials stated this week. The arrangement with the bureau will mean that it will save the school district some $22,000, Superintendent Dennis Carlson said Tuesday. The town council last week approved spending approximately $25,000 to purchase new playground equipment. A donation by General Electric Co. could ensure that this year’s Fourth of July festival will feature the largest fireworks show yet.
