    Ten Years Ago A tense situation came to a peaceful conclusion last Thursday as a Coulee Dam girl, who was feared missing returned safely. Approximately 40 minutes after Tonya Timentwa reported that her 4 year-old daughter Alahna Timentwa was missing, the girl returned to the 1101 Camas Street home. A Grand Coulee Dam Area woman cut off four of her fingers and was still able to drive herself to Coulee Community Hospital for assistance.     Ten Years Ago A woodpecker stuck its beak where it didn’t belong yesterday and set off a fire that brought several fire departments to put down the blaze. A canoe more than a century old became the latest addition to the Colville Tribe Museum Sunday as it made the trip from Winthrop to Coulee Dam.     The Grand Coulee Dam School District board passed its 2013-14 budget Monday night after a public hearing on the matter. No one showed up to question the $9.5 million budget. The new budget exceeds the one for the 2012-13 school year by more than a million dollars. Superintendent Dennis Carlson said the increased revenue comes largely from the way the state is funding education.     Learning and fun combined The school board Monday night approved a field trip request from SHARP Kids and Summer Rocks to go to Moses Lake. The trip will include a stop at a pea farm, and at Soap Lake to conclude a unit on water testing.     Ten Years Ago A fire once again hit the Colville Indian Reservation last week as flames charred more than 2,000 acres and threatened several homes.     Ten Years Ago A master plan is now in the works for Coulee Dam’s Mason City Park and all of the town’s residents can help decide what the plan will contain. A proposed master plan with a rough outline of future changes to the east Coulee Dam park was approved by the town council last Wednesday.     Grand Coulee Dam School District Superintendent Dennis Carlson was pleased with the new state budget signed by the governor Sunday. The new state two-year budget fully funds all day kindergarten, a switch from the past when the state funded kindergartens by only 50 percent. The fully state-funded kindergarten will save the district an estimated $150,000 a year. Prior to this the board of directors had committed the district to funding the half not funded by the state because the members felt that early learning needed a boost in the district.... Full story

    Using the Colville Tribal TERO office as a hiring headquarters is working well, according to officials on the Grand Coulee Dam School District’s new K-12 school project. A report by Walker Construction to the school board showed that through June 14, 73 percent of hours worked so far on the school project were worked by Native American workers.     Ten Years Ago Armed with only garden hoses, several Coulee Dam residents helped prevent a fire from destroying two Coulee Dam homes last Friday. Coulee Dam Mayor Quincy Snow said strong winds knocked a poplar tree over on Yucca Street. That caused a short in the line at the pole behind Dennis King’s home at 702 Tulip Street and started the fire. Village Cinema - Movie of the week: Bruce Almighty.
