The local chamber of commerce will offer three runs and a walk on Colorama Saturday, all featuring a route over the Grand Coulee Dam. The Run The Dam will take place the Saturday of Colorama weekend, May 10. It will feature 5-kilometer, 10K and half marathon runs, plus a “Walk the Dam — Build a Gym” fundraiser for the local school district. At one point, the Grand Coulee Dam School District was worried about a declining student population; now it is worried that it could end up with too many students. Park supported by city Grand Coulee City Council voted the $9,000 it pledged to support the maintenance of North Dam Park. The funds will come from the city’s hotel/motel tax monies and be given to the Coulee Area Park & Recreation District, the organization managing the park. The first step in developing a Gay/Straight Alliance Club at Lake Roosevelt High School was approved by the Grand Coulee Dam School District board of directors Monday night. The board has asked the group to return in March with a set of bylaws, a purpose statement and financial cost to the district. Ten Years Ago CCH is to receive disaster money to help treat people in a major disaster, such as a bioterrorist attack. Penny Lewis, chair of the CCH safety committee, announced last week that the hospital would receive nearly $40,000.00 in grant monies for equipment and disaster training. Coulee Dam’s Water Filtration Plant is nearing completion reported Gray and Osborn, town of Coulee Dam’s engineering firm. The chamber of commerce named two of its own to awards last Thursday night as the "Achiever of the Year," and "Business of the Year." Suspended students in the Grand Coulee Dam School District will soon be able to work off one day of their suspension by attending a special Saturday school. The district’s board of directors approved the plan at a recent meeting and the Saturday school is now in effect. Wright Elementary used to confine a 7-year old “special needs” child. School enrollment up again Enrollment number for Grand Coulee Dam District schools continues to exceed predictions. January’s enrollment in all three schools was recorded at 667. That’s 27 over what the district budgeted for and 46 students over the same period a year ago. So far this year, enrollment is 205 students over the same period last year. Joseph S. "Steve" Sanchez, 68, passed away Sunday evening, January 12, 2014, from his Grand Coulee home surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with cancer. Following graduation from high school and attending college, twenty-one-year-old Steve married Janet Bury in Spokane on June 18, 1966. Jerry Birdwell is the area's "Volunteer of the Year" for 2013. He was so honored by a vote of the people over three other candidates. Birdwell, 58, of Grand Coulee, could also claim the honors as "Mr. Fixit" of the area, because you can always find him where there's some kind of a problem.
