An effort to remove a problematic, invasive fish from local waters has united multiple groups towards the common cause. The predatory northern pike are said by biologist to be a threat to native fish populations. The Colville Tribes' Fish and Wildlife department has extended its Northern Pike Rewards Program through the end of 2018, according to a recent press release. CTFW has paid out over $10,000 to anglers since the program began on May 1. The program was started as a way to reduce pike numbers in Lake Roosevelt and requires anglers to turn in pike heads in specified locations for $10 a head, big or small, as long as it is in good enough condition. The Bureau of Indian Affairs will provide the Colville Confederated Tribes with $3.9 million to reforest areas devastated by the catastrophic 2015 wildfire season, according to a CCT Aug. 29 press release. A new section on the CCT’s website, titled “Reclaim The Name” at www.colvilletribes.com, has information on the name change, videos of tribal members weighing in on the topic, as well as a form to suggest a new name, or voice comments. Leaders of The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation are seriously considering changing the tribes’ name to “The 12 Confederated Tribes of the Big Water,” or a variation of such. “Big Water” is a translation of what the tribes called the Columbia River before contact with Europeans. Nespelem now has a Boys & Girls Club, located in the area's community center, offering a range of activities, mentorship, and help with homework. A soft opening of the club occurred on June 21 for the summer, and an official opening will occur sometime in the fall after school starts and when the club will be assisting with academics. The Colville Tribes will repay the federal government nearly a quarter million dollars to settle allegations it submitted false Medicaid claims in connection with bills submitted by a mental health contractor for services allegedly never rendered, U.S. Attorney Michael Ormsby announced in Spokane late Tuesday.
