    The National Park Service Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail is like a giant jigsaw puzzle; the whole is there to see, but the problem is how to put the pieces together.     With reduced staffing and resources during the winter season, the facilities open in the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area are limited, but the National Park Service unit last week listed several boat launches snowplowed on an “as needed” basis on weekdays during the snowy season.     The annual Balde Eagle festival will be held in Grand Coulee Thursday, Feb. 16, and in Davenport on Friday, Feb. 17, according to National Park Service Education Specialist Janice Elvidge.     Community members are encouraged to attend an Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail informational meeting Jan. 23 in Coulee Dam. The national project is to tell the story of the Ice Age Floods, which includes 16,000 square miles in four states and, locally, formed the Grand Coulee.     In a spirit of concern and cooperation, Coulee Dam had its first “Community Watch” meeting last Tuesday night. About 45 people turned out at the old stone church in Coulee Dam, to discuss the rash of burglaries and car prowls that have occurred in the town and region in recent months.     Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area is considering expanding recreational areas at the northern half of the recreation area.     Electric City has agreed to provide Washington State University an additional $1,000 to finish up work on its Pathway and Revitalization project. The city had contracted with WSU’s Rural Communities Design Initiative team last spring to do initial planning for a project that includes downtown sidewalks, two parks and a trail system along Banks Lake.     Volunteer department responses reported Volunteer fire Chief Richard Paris reported to the Grand Coulee City Council last Tuesday that his department made eight fire calls and responded to 34 ambulance calls during the month of July.   • West Nile virus found in mosquitos near Kettle Falls

    Some mosquitos near Kettle Falls day use and group site campground have tested positive for West Nile Virus, the National Park Service said last week. Conditions this summer at Lake Roosevelt have been optimal for mosquitos, the NPS noted. Visitors, park staff, and our neighbors and partners have been dealing with an extraordinarily large mosquito population, especially in the Kettle Falls area, NPS officials have stated.     A full report on Electric City’s proposed Pathway and Revitalization project could come by late August, city Deputy Clerk Russell Powers said last week.     Grand Coulee Police 7/17 - A Grand Coulee woman who ran her car onto a boulder on Roosevelt Drive was cited for driving while under the influence. - USBR Plant Protection advised police that people were climbing on the concrete pillars that overhang the feeder canal.     Tribe plans small casino at Twin Lakes The Colville Business Council voted Thursday to allow a small casino to be developed at Rainbow Beach Resort near Inchelium, the Tribal Tribune reported.     Housing hope lists fill up The Housing Authority of Okanogan County will actually close its waiting lists for housing assistance programs on June 30 because it has a list that will last two years. The agency says it will cut off its waiting lists for Section 8 Housing, Tenant Base Rental Assistance and 5-Year Mainstream Voucher Program at 4 p.m. June 30.
