    Roger S Lucas|Mar 30, 2016

The Grand Coulee Dam School District school board approved the purchase of a 2001 Suburban at its meeting Monday night. The vehicle has 71,000 miles on it and the purchase price is $9,386. Prior to the decision to purchase the nine-passenger vehicle, the district rented it from Practical Rent a Car, in Grand Coulee, when school officials were scheduled to go to education meetings around the state. It was pointed out by school officials that trips scheduled for this spring would cost the district nearly $1,000, so it made good sense to purchase... Full story

    John R McNeil II|Mar 30, 2016

  • Cities fighting over treatment costs

    Roger S Lucas|Mar 23, 2016

Electric City and Grand Coulee have both “lawyered up” over a dispute about arsenic treatment charges. Grand Coulee has paid for the charges since September 2014, but hasn’t paid for charges from 2013 to the September date in 2014. Grand Coulee City Clerk Carol Boyce said the city has referred the matter to its attorney and that it doesn’t feel charges that have been made for 2013 and part of 2014, prior to a formal agreement, need to be paid. • Internecine arguing makes case for municipal merger

    Scott Hunter|Mar 23, 2016

Two examples glare in the news this week, showing why consolidating local towns into one city would make so much sense. It’s far from clear that consolidation would actually cut down on personnel or save as much money as one might assume, but freeing oneself from a doomed mindset isn’t about the money it would save. Such a mindset currently steers the actions city councils in Grand Coulee and Electric City must believe they have to follow. It’s a mindset that draws needless distinctions between the two, when in truth, the people could be serve... Full story

  • Sending juveniles to Spokane facility wrong for many reasons

    Carole Schroeder|Mar 23, 2016

Moving the Omak juvenile detention facility to a psychiatric prison outside of Spokane disregards the needs of vulnerable Okanogan children in several ways: • State laws mandate that these marginalized children remain in their communities whenever possible. We have a civic and legal responsibility to take care of our own children. • Already at-risk children deserve a local therapeutic setting, rather than exposure to a maximum-security psychiatric prison system hours away. Reintegration is much more difficult when children are separated fro...

    John R McNeil II|Mar 23, 2016

Raider Head Coach Steve Files said he had yet to receive the final results from the MLCA coach, so results are still coming. Following a notice in The Star t... Full story
